I am a little confused and wondering how long is hrt for? I had my tah/bso on 3/1/01 at the age of 50. Are you required to continue using hrt forever? Doesn't the body at some point when you get older get used to no hormones naturally?

I'm confused....

Also, have been thinking about trying some progestone. I would like to at least try it over the counter before contacting the doctor. Is there any danger in that?

Thanks for your input.

Hi Patti,
Well, the answer to the first is it depends. I'm taking my low dose for the foreseeable future, possibly forever. I was 6 months without it and I didn't like it, especially the brain fog. My depression is better than it has been in years. In my family, all the risks point to replacement as the best choice.

But someone else's risks might point to short term use. Apparently risks only climb somewhere between 5 to 10 years or so. In my case, my body told me loud and clear that it needed help--not from the hot flashes but from the urge incontinence and the brain fog. They led to serious quality of life issues. With HRT, they aren't a problem--ok, I can be ditzy but then I always could be.

And no, progesterone is available over the counter in low doses. I use over the counter (low dose of estrogen helps). Took a couple weeks of worse effects, and then the water weight vanished, the migraines disappeared, the joint aches went. I did tell my doctor I was using it. She won't prescribe something she doesn't know thoroughly, but taking it OTC was cool with her.
