Second Opinion - Not Pre-cancerous!

I posted a few weeks ago about being diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia with atypia. My gyn was recommending either treatment with Megace or a hysterectomy. Since I have issues with hormonal birth control I was researching my options, which led me here - where I was urged to seek a second opinion from a gyn/onc .

I am so glad I listened!

The gyn/onc I saw (who was super nice!) was surprised by my diagnosis since I have zero risk factors. After a bit of history, she said she wanted their pathologist to review the biopsies as she thought that my symptoms could be a result of irritation from my ParaGard (copper) IUD. Honestly, that's been my thought for years. I never had an abnormal pap until I had my IUD inserted 5 years ago, and ever since then it's been just about every other pap coming back ASCUS leading up to the most recent one that was AGCUS.

Well, she called me back this morning to let me know that I do NOT need surgery! The pathology review found absolutely nothing that would suggest cancer or even pre-cancer. There was a small amount of glandular cells in the cervical biopsy, but that was it.

They then tracked down the original pathology report and the pathologists findings were very close to what they came up with during their review. Apparently, a MISTAKE was made somewhere along the line, and the diagnosis became much more concerning. They have no idea where the mistake was made, but they are looking into it.

I was so relieved I nearly cried.

Thank you Sisters for saving me from an unnecessary hysterectomy!

Re: Second Opinion - Not Pre-cancerous!

First - that's GREAT news, very glad to hear it!

It's very interesting to me to hear that this may be connected to your IUD. I had 28 perfectly normal annual pap smears...then I had the Mirena IUD for 5 months and had it removed at my annual that year...got a ASCUS result for the very first time. Two repeat paps since have shown the same thing....colposcopy and biopsies have shown no hyperplasia, however, and nothing abnormal at all. It has confused me that a pap can say that something doesn't appear to be right but a more extensive check (the colpo and biopsy) show nothing.

Next follow up for me is the first week of May so hopefully I will see improvement.

Again, great news, so glad to hear!

That's great news!!

I am a little concerned that you came so close to such a major surgery...for nothing. Its scary to think what a difference that "mistake" could have made to your life.

It is a very scary thought. I am glad that somebody caught it before it was too late.

Re: Second Opinion - Not Pre-cancerous!

Those type of "mistakes" certainly are scary and just reinforces the need to be involved in our own care, question everything, and don't be afraid to ask for second opinions

Re: Second Opinion - Not Pre-cancerous!

The cynic in me wonders if the old gyn accidently on purpose made a mistake.
