Decided on the TVH

Hi - is that what it is called - total vaginal hysterectomy - uterus+cervix? I am confused by the acronyms out here.

Anyhow, I had a choice between laproscopic and vaginal -- after watching you tube videos to see what i would be subjected to while knocked out - I decided the vaginal would be better. I've had a child, so looks like things might easily come south. The laproscopy looked pretty violent in comparison, almost like when they do liposuction? Would be interested to hear what you ladies think.

Question- I've been reading about belly bands and belly swelling - will that happen with the vaginal surgery or is that for the laproscopic only? I haven't had any pre op appointments yet - this is all very last minute so I see gyn Thursday and the pre op stuff on Friday, then the surgery Monday.

Obviously they are taking out an organ that I've had my whole life, so i am expecting my ab area will be very sore as things rearrange in there.

Thanks, ladies. Glad I found this site and you!!

Re: Decided on the TVH

I had a TVH March 29th and you are correct (TVH - Total Vaginal Hysterectomy). They remove the uterus and cervix. Are they removing your tubes also? I kept mine. Anyway, I did have some belly swelling, but nothing horribly major. I did have some tenderness in the belly area, probably from them jiggling all of my innards around, and I did have to take my pain pills from time to time. I will tell you that my worst day of pain was the day of the surgery. The next morning when they came in and removed my cathetor, I was up and walking around the floor I was on. I was slow, but it wasn't painful for me to walk.

I wish you all the luck in the world! This was the best decision I have made in such a long time (I wish I had made it sooner) and I hope that you have an equally positive experience. Good Luck!!!

Re: Decided on the TVH

They may have other considerations for TVH, like making it LAVH (lap assisted vag) if there are adhesions or such. I consented to possible LAVH but only had TVH. It was an easy recovery and I didn't notice a swelly belly. I took Aleve for 3 wks. I think its a good way to go if its appropriate for you but really they all have pros and cons and it depends on lots of factors. (Why you're having it, drs skill, etc). So good luck with your surgery and recovery.
