Still on pain meds 4 weeks out, is this normal?

I had my TAH on March 19th. I have a slight opening in my abdominal incision the doctor said is ok and would close on its own. I also have a yeast infection on my incision which I'm using Nystatin powder for. However, I'm still needing my 800 mg Motrin and Norco about 1-2 times a day. I try to go without it but some days are really rough and I'm in pain. Yes, I've probably been doing too much such as bending over to get clothes out of dryer, I will stop that. Is anyone else still on some pain meds 4 weeks out? I have to go back to work after 6 weeks due to not enough leave time. I'm also concerned because when I do run out of my Norco I'm afraid doctor wont prescribe more because at 4 weeks I think I should be off pain meds. How is everyone else doing? Am I just a big wuss? When I saw a doctor last week about my incision, she said it was ok to still be on some pain meds, but I just wasn't sure at 4 weeks. Are there others out there who've been on some pain meds longer than 4 weeks?

Re: Still on pain meds 4 weeks out, is this normal?

One thing I am sure of is that you're not a big wuss! From everything I've read here everybody has different levels of pain from their surgery for varying timeframes. I had a TAH on Feb 23rd, after about 2 weeks I wasn't taking any Percocets but there are days even now when I still take a Motrin 800, especially if I overdo it I'll have some pain. Or if I wear too tight clothes and sit all day at work. If you are in pain I would take them when you need them, there's absolutely no need to suffer when you're going thru the healing process, so I would listen to your body. Best of luck to you and be patient while your body heals, TAH is a major surgery. Good luck!

Re: Still on pain meds 4 weeks out, is this normal?

I was still in alot of pain around 4 weeks out but figured out that it was just because I was doing too much. Sit down and relax and hopefully it will get better. I stopped taking my Percocet around 2 weeks I think, but still took my Ibuprofren every couple days or so, when I needed it. I think you just need to not do so much, after all, how often do you get permission to do nothing and relax?

Re: Still on pain meds 4 weeks out, is this normal?

I took ibuprofen for several weeks after my surgery whenever I felt the twinges.

I also found that ice packs on my abdomen really helped with swelling and pain.

I even used the ice pack when I went back to work (I sit at a desk) for a couple of weeks.

I went back after 6 weeks and I really felt much much better the last week I was home then I did the rest of the time. I took it very easy the whole time I was off and that last week I had to practice showering, getting dressed, and leaving the house. I was worn out the first week back to work, but I was able to make it through the whole day as long as I didn't do anything else when I got home.

Do you think some of your pain may be coming from your yeast infection? Try eating some Greek yogurt (Dannon's is really tasty) or taking some probiotics to help that heal more quickly.

Pamper yourself and give your body time to get better.

Re: Still on pain meds 4 weeks out, is this normal?

You're not a wuss!
Everyone is different - i thought I was doing "ok" - but would take the narcotics 1-2 times a day. week 4 post op i felt more pain/ weird pain- went in to see doc - got CT scan, etc - nothing there but he thinks i strained something doing too much, plus I have Fibromyalgia which makes your nerves "feel" pain more/ more sensitive to pain. he gave me vicodan & valium refills without hesitation and told me to call for more if i needed them. of course he warned me to use judiciously, but he was more focused on the valium since people can more easily get "addicted" to it - but he said that pain is real & will need on occassion even after going back to work. Whew! I was worried too that i wouldn't get more meds or they'd think I was crazy or hysterical or nuts or just liking pain meds! but luckily i had a great doc - just be clear & communicative w/ doc, explain your pain full, don't downplay it ( as women tend to do), and explain how it affects your everyday life.

Best to you!
