Constipation before Surgery

New to the forum. My question is I have bm problems already, ongoing for years. 12 yrs ago I had a c-section and i remember then trying to have a bm was hell. I was wondering if i should do a cleanse before i go into surgery so it would won't be soooo difficult for me post op?

Re: Constipation before Surgery

I encourage you to talk to your doctor before doing any type of bowel prep before surgery and follow your doctor's instructions exactly. If you do a bowel prep on your own and show up for surgery dehydrated, your surgery could be cancelled. Your doctor will be able to give you guidance.

Re: Constipation before Surgery

ManY, if not most, surgeons order a bowel prep the day pre op. Does yours not? It would be good to ask about it first, but most of us faced mag citrate and clear liquids the day before. Seems like an especially good idea if you already tend be be slowed up. Usually its part of the pre op visit discussion.

Re: Constipation before Surgery

Talk to your Dr about it when you have your pre-op appt this week.

Almost everyone does some type of bowel cleanse pre-op.

In addition you should be prepared for when you get home from your stay at the castle so that you don't run into problems from your medications making you more constipated.

Colase (stool softeners), high fiber foods, making certain you drink lots and lots of water will help. oh, and gas-ex!

Good luck!

Re: Constipation before Surgery

Thanks everyone for the replies. I will have to call my Dr. because I was given instructions to call the hospital 2 days before scheduled surgery to find out what time I'm suppose to arrive at the hospital. I don't have a pre op appt.

Re: Constipation before Surgery

You got good advice here to call your doctor before you do anything... I have exactly the same problem as you do, so I will share my experience...

My doctor recommended Phillips Milk of Magnesia "to get things going" and then Miralax after that "to keep things going well"... I wish I had known about this years ago!

I had my TAH on January 18th and I still use the Miralax about every other day (of course after discussing it all with the doctor)... once you have your surgery, while you are recovering, this is very important, to "keep things going well"... also, drink plenty of water!

Best of luck to you!!!

Re: Constipation before Surgery

Had my pre-op today and had a list of questions for my Dr. After having read about bowel prep all over on here, i asked about it and sure enough... i'm in for it! Sometimes i think the Drs don't tell us everything at once because they want to avoid information overload. My own philosophy regarding any procedure is.. Its MY body and i'm entitled to ask any questions i want! If i don't get a reasonable answer, i'm out of there to get another opinion.

Hugs!

Re: Constipation before Surgery

My pre-op is weds at 10am. My surgery Thurs at 10am... am starting to wonder if she will request it too and if it is enough time for it?
I had already planned to be on all liquids for wed and tomorrow cooked veggies and liquids and jello.
I never had bm issues till this fibroid tumor got so big I now only go once every 3-4 days!
Ugh... I have bowel preps.... ugh
good luck ladies!

Re: Constipation before Surgery

Okay...random thing I did the day before....I told my surgeon the next day and she said it was an awesome idea. I did not have a doctor ordered pre op. I of course did not sleep well the night before so I was up but if you do sleep set your alarm for 11:55 pm. Take 2 stool softeners...(Wal-Mart brand works) and 2 gas relief pills...again Walmart brand works...and as soon as you get home from the hospital....Don't start again till you get home....Take them around the clock the first 24 hours if you can....I did not have any constipation or one gas pain.....I promise...
