Depo Detox

Has anyone had bad depression with Depo Provera? I just got my second shot and the side effects keep worsening. I nearly have to force myself to eat, I have hot flashes terribly, and everyday is a struggle just to do the basics. I know I have to get off of this shot, but the week before my last shot was horrible, I felt like my life was falling apart. So now I have to figure out how to survive getting off this shot. Does anyone have any advice on how to ease the detox process?

Re: Depo Detox

I was on depo Provera for years in the 1990s. I felt great on it, but apparently it didn't like me -- I had breast cancer in the 2000s, probably because of it. However, I'm not aware of any "detox" process - I just stopped getting the shots. It was almost a year before I started having periods again but, other than that, I really didn't notice anything different.

If you had bad depression with depo Provera, why did you get the second shot? I'm not aware of any way to hasten its leaving your tissues.

Re: Depo Detox

I was under the impression that after the first shot the side effects would decrease. That is was just a matter of initially getting the medication in my system.

Re: Depo Detox

Hi blesseddgreen.

From what I've seen in friends and relatives the Depo shot affects people differently, but for birth control I haven't known many people who chose to stay on the shot longterm. My daughter-in-law and my niece were on the shot and they both hated it and just stopped the shot. My niece is only 17 and my sister found out she was sexually active and made her take the shot as a knee-jerk reaction to hearing the overwhelming news that her daughter was sexually active . My daughter-in-law is 29. My niece gained a lot of weight and had lots of breakthru bleeding while my daughter-in-law lost weight but was too moody and cranky to live with herself, forget anyone else putting up with her mood swings--and she was no peach to live with before taking the shot but I guess when the shot made her hate herself then she had to take action . They both opted out of the shot and just chose the oral pill over the shot but had no side effects from discontinuing the shot--they just stopped after a couple of shots. I thought it was comparable to the pill in that you just stop it without any side effects except those similar to the pill. Perhaps going onto the pill was their 'Depo Detox'???...

Hope that helps.
