Surgery Postponed.....

I am really upset. I was supposed to have surgery this Monday (May 3rd) and I just got a call a couple of hours ago that they cannot do it because my blood count is not up enough.

I guess I am more aggravated than upset. They need to be safe because you definitely do not want to do surgery with not enough blood in your body. So I cannot totally understand that.

It is just that you get yourself all worked up for this - make plans for your life for a month - go on Disability - now everything is changed.

I guess I am just being a big baby.

Has this happened to anyone else??

Re: Surgery Postponed.....

Awww... I know exactly how you feel as I had my surgery cancelled but for a very different reason. I was sooo incredibly upset as well cuz it takes so much effort to get mentally prepared and so I totally understand and empathize for you. And no, you definitely aren't a big baby whatsoever! Has your doctor given you any suggestions on how you can get your blood count up? Hope you can have your surgery rescheduled soon. Hang in there.

Re: Surgery Postponed.....

Thanks Hope....

I have to take some iron injections in order to get in up and also take Procrit (sp?). I should only have to take it 2 times or so and it should be where they want it.

Thanks for the encouragement. Really needed that.

Re: Surgery Postponed.....

Has your doctor suggested taking iron pills? I have been taking 2 a day as per my hospital's instructions and my blood count seems to be doing well thus far. You may want to ask your doctor about iron pills.

Re: Surgery Postponed.....

I was taking iron pills for months - my iron was really, really low. Completely anemic - from "massive" blood loss during periods.

So now we have to move to Plan B.

I have to get more information tomorrow because I was completely in shock and I was not really listening to the nurse. I will be in a better place tomorrow (hopefully), so that I can see what they say.

Re: Surgery Postponed.....

I understand what you mean about massive blood loss from your periods cuz I was as well. If it wasn't for the Lupron injections prescribed by my doctor, I would be hemorraghing and bleeding 24/7.

I empathize for you and totally understand your shock cuz I too was in shock the day I was told my surgery was cancelled and was bawling the whole time that I couldn't really listen properly to the doctor. My body actually went into literal trauma.

Re: Surgery Postponed.....

Out of curiousity.... What was your hct, WBC, and rbc counts? I am anemic too and I know my counts were lower than normal but not severe. How low is your count?

Thanks Hope....

Yes - I will figure out today what is going on. They did tell me that it would not take that long (maybe June).

I will keep everyone informed.

Re: Surgery Postponed.....

Hey Verona....

My CBC is 10.9 and they need it at 12-13 (not sure about the other stuff you asked). I had an added factor because I do not accept blood transfusions. So they have to be extra careful, so that is why I think the count has to be so high (or is that normal??).

Re: Surgery Postponed.....

Hi Mayabee,

Totally sympathise. My surgery was also postponed a few days before (different reasons) and it is so hard when you have mentally and physically prepared so much, especially if you don't get given another date immediately and are just in limbo of waiting. I was beginning to despair when I got the reschedule call & then felt better!

Good luck and I hope that you get sorted out ASAP!
