UK sister 5 years post op - should I be getting bone scan now?

Hi Ladies

Been a long time since my last post.

Thought I would ask the question, docs here don't think I should be worried as on HRT but experiencing back problems and recently diagnosed as lactose intolerant so am starting to get a bit worried that I should be having one?

Anyone had similiar problems?

Thanks

Daisy

I had one done after my vit D tested very low but they said usually they wait until age 60, which seemed like a long time to wait. I'd think earlier would be better?

Daisy,

Yes, you should. My doc recommended a bone scan at one year post op. Even though I was taking ert and calcium doesn't necessarily mean that loss of bone density can't happen. If caught early, steps can be taken to help build bone.

Hi!

I think it's a good idea to have one done as a baseline. I had that done years ago and was surprised to learn that despite being on estrogen I had osteopenia, which is a precursor to osteoporosis. My recent bone scan was much better. I don't have osteopenia anymore. My vitamin D level tested on the low side so I'm on a prescription supplement for now and was told to increase my calcium intake. I'll have another scan done in two years.
