Just had hyst now need chemo and scared :(

Had my 1 week post op apt and was hit with the news that they are recommending 8 wks of chemo. The good news is the lymph nodes tested all came back clear so there is no more sign of the cancer, but the want to do the chemo as a precaution to make sure nothing comes back.

I am still dealing with the recovery of the TAH and can't imagine how horrible I'm going to feel on this chemo regimin. They called it "intensive". I will be doing 1 treatment per week but each treatment is 2 days so I have to stay overnight in the hospital. I feel like I will be doing nothing but lying around for 8 weeks missing out on spending time with my 18 month old (after barely dealing with the fact that this whole thing has left me unable to have more children) I want to spend as much time with her as possible and I know I won't be able to keep up with her.

The treatment looks like this:
Week 1
Etoposide - day 1
Methotrexate - 12 hour across both days
Dactinomycin - day 2
Week 2
Etoposide - day 1
Cisplatin - day 1 overnight with IV to flush kidneys through day 2

Repeat this 4 times for 8 weeks total

Has anyone had similar treatment? I'm so nervous and upset. I know it's dumb to be worried about hair loss and I'm not usually a vain person but I already feel robbed of being a women with the hyst and losing my hair makes me feel less like a women. I am trying to stay positive but this makes me feel so weak

Just wanted to offer some gentle (((((HUGS))))) the whole roller coaster of cancer sure can do a number on us. I don't have experience with the chemo they are recommending for you, but please remember that this is a temporary situation for prolonged health.

I haven't had that but want to offer you support in getting through this. I know it seems a lot ahead of you, try to take it a week, a day at a time to keep it more managable. Lots of ladies here have been through this and are very supportive. You can come here anytime. Sending hugs.

Re: Just had hyst now need chemo and scared :(

Hi Jen,
I did chemo in 2007. I know it seems scary. But, you can do it. I am such a big baby and I am here to tell you that YOU CAN do it. I felt the same way about the hair. I knew it was going to fall off and I was prepared. But when it happened...boy was I sad. My hair started to fall off little by little and I didnt wash my hair for 5 days because I knew it would all come out. I was prepared for being bald, I was strong...until it happened. After 5days of not washing my hair, I washed it...Huge chunks came out, I wasnt totally bald but I had big bald spots and boy did I cry in the shower. But I told myself that I would rather lose MY HAIR by MY OWN hand AND NOT by CHEMO. SO I got the clippers and buzzed my head. It was the most impowering feeling. I kept thinking of GI Jane when I did it. Keep in mind that your hair WILL grow back. It will grow back in better condition then it was before. MY hair is fuller and thick and I LOVE IT. Keep your head up sweetie My thoughts are with you. Feel free to to ask questions. We are all here to help one another.

I also want to send some more gentle s along to you. There are many women on here who have gone the chemo route and I'm sure they'll come along soon.
The advice about trying to take things one day at a time is a good one. May you find your treatment very doable with minor if any side effects. I'll be sending positive thoughts and keeping you in prayer too.

Re: Just had hyst now need chemo and scared :(

Hair loss is something I decided to prepare for in a fun way-- I got a wacky looking wig that I would have never worn, and I like playing with hats and turbans. It's a bit like being a different person for a while and can be freeing if you look at it that way. If hair loss is the worst it is quite manageable. Your chemo reactions will be unique to you and are really hard to predict sinceeveryone is different. Relaxation helps, get some cds to prepare your mind and spirit for calming experiences. (www.healthjourneys.com) Best of luck and hang in there--you are doing everything to take care of yourself. It will be worth it!
