Pre-op questions, have had a hernia repair with mesh

Hi, I'll be having a scheduled dVH done on May 15th. It is hopeful this will greatly help the severe pain fibroids have caused me for over a year now. I had endometrial ablation surgery done two years ago, and this only aided in stopping my heavy periods. I also had a hernia repair with mesh in 2005 and will be consulting with the surgeon who preformed it. I know how the incisions in my tummy are going to feel, and am somewhat prepared for that. Both my Ob/Gyn and my surgeon will be together during the procedure. I understand that it is tricky and even though it's a month away, I'm getting very nervous. Please, I'm welcome to advice.

Re: Pre-op questions, have had a hernia repair with mesh

TamT722, first off I wish you the best of luck. I have a question for you, if it's not to personal. You mentioned you had a "hernia repair". Was it an umbilical hernia? I am just curious because I know I have one and have never had anything done about it(really didn't bother me to much, except when I would have my menstrual cycle) and I know my gyn knows of it and asked me the last time I saw him, if it had bothered me...I told him "NO".

I am having a LAVH tomorrow, and I am a little worried about it now(umbilical hernia). I had to have a laproscopic surgery years ago, so I am sure that there is possibly scare tissue from that. Plus, my belly button is one of the areas that they are entering from. I am just hoping that either a)it doesn't flare up the hernia b)or they remove the darn thing!

At least you have the ob/gyn AND your surgeon that is going to be in there. I think with having the both of them, you are on a better road for success

Re: Pre-op questions, have had a hernia repair with mesh

Hi, I wish you the best of luck. I hope you have a speedy recovery. Thank you so much for your reply.

My hernia is right above by belly button. It was about the size of an apricot when the repair with mesh was done. It is much larger now. I had the laparoscopy with a large piece of mesh. I have 12 staples that they have to work around.

Re: Pre-op questions, have had a hernia repair with mesh

The date of my surgery is growing closer. The expected date is June 15th and I've been growing a little more worried each day. This wonderful site has been a Godsend.
I've found more informative information here than anywhere else. My own OB/GYN didn't give me half of the info or expectations and I am so grateful for the time that others have taken with all of their posts for both post op and pre op answers and suggestions.
I'm still having a hard time getting information on my second hernia repair combined with the da Vinci assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy. I am aware there's a chance that it will have to be done by incision instead of the vag. method. Right now it depends upon the size of my uterus and the large number of fibroids living on and around it. The MRI tech stated there are "fibroids too numerous to count" and that just doesn't sound promising to me.
I will be consulting with the General Surgeon who did the first hernia repair on June 10th to see how we will tackle it this time around since it's grown considerably larger in the four years since the mesh was put in.
There are just so many things stessing me at this point. Am trying to get the house deep cleaned, get loose ends tied up at work for the weeks that I'll be home, and help my teen boys finish up their school year. All of this while trying to keep dealing with the nasty back and pelvic pain I can't wait to be rid of.
Have been trying to stay calm about things, but it's so hard. I still feel that being fore warned is being fore armed, and the more I know the more easily I'll be able to deal with almost any situation. Still, I'm getting pretty anxious.
Please, if any of you have any info on a huge hernia located above the belly button fix combined with DAVH I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank You so much,
tamt722
