Re: Pain Meds

My pain is being managed with over the counter pain killers since yesterday. Everyone is affected by surgery differently and deals with pain differently though. If you feel you need it, don't hesitate to call the doctor and request a prescription for more. Excess pain can have a detrimental effect on your recovery.

Re: Pain Meds

Each doctor has his/her own protocol for post op meds. I only had pain once the day after surgery and didn't even go home with a script. I had hordes of complications but still didn't deal with any pain issues.

If you use up the pain meds and find you are in pain that is not alleviated by over the counter pain meds, call your doctor and explain what is going on.

Re: Pain Meds

It is now day 10 since my TAH/BSO and on day 8 I ran out of my perscription meds so all I had to do was call the doctors office and they called the drugstore and renewed the perscription. A day after my husband picked up the perscription I find out that I'm allergic to the meds. So I now have to stick to extra-strength tylenol and advil, which seems to be enough. I have heard that it is normal for some women to be on meds for at least 2 weeks after surgery.
Good luck to you!

Re: Pain Meds

Doctors don't like to over prescribe pain meds because a lot of them are addicting. I was on Vicodin taking ibuprofen between hours my first week and then switched to total ibuprofen when I need it. It worked better anyway.

Re: Pain Meds

You just have to see what works best for your body. If you need pain management stronger than OTC then ask! It is harder for your body to heal properly if you are in pain all the time. Don't be afraid to ask if you need to! I used pain meds (tylenol 4 and some) for the first 3-4 days, then as needed. I used them mostly at night to sleep when. Good Luck!
