Internal Post Op Check Up - Does it Hurt? Scared!!

My doctor says that when I come in in 3 weeks she wants to do an internal check up to see how I'm recovering. I was too scared when she mentioned it to ask what that meant.

Can anyone enlighten me? Is it like a pelvic exam? Does it hurt? What should I expect?

Re: Internal Post Op Check Up - Does it Hurt? Scared!!

My 6wk was just like a regular pelvic...with a cold speculum.
Dr was cautious and gentle and it wasn't that painful, I would say more uncomfortable than anything.
Let me tell you I was really freaked about it and then felt silly after. Hope your experience is just as easy..maybe not as cold though! LOL
My Dr is a woman too!!! She should know better!

Re: Internal Post Op Check Up - Does it Hurt? Scared!!

I just had my appointment a couple of days ago (at two weeks out) and it was no problem. I was nervous before it as well, but it was no more uncomfortable than a regular pelvic exam. And she said everything looked great and was holding together nicely, so that was good news.

I was very relieved that it didn't hurt. Best of luck to you!

Re: Internal Post Op Check Up - Does it Hurt? Scared!!

i'd say it depends on how you handle regular pelvic exams... mine were always painful and so was the extremely quick check of my cuff, but my dr knows that about me so is gentle and fast... it didn't stay hurting or do any cramping afterwards though...

So it's like a pelvic exam? Historically I have had difficulty with pelvic exams - way too painful. One time they even had to give me anesthesia. Eeek!

Re: Internal Post Op Check Up - Does it Hurt? Scared!!

I'm not sure why they were painful for you and if that was related to the reason for your hyst. Maybe that cause is fixed now? At any rate its a quick exam without tests, etc, and checks healing. I'm hoping it will be easy for you.

Oh goodness!!! Here I thought I was helping to make you feel better Guess I can't lie though.
I would talk to the dr and let them know your concerns so you don't have any horrible surprises. Maybe they will give you something to take before hand.
I really hope it won't be that bad for you!!!!

Re: Internal Post Op Check Up - Does it Hurt? Scared!!

I didn't have an internal exam until week 6 but was a nervous wreck thinking I would have one at week 2. My doctor was very careful when I did have one and it wasn't nearly as bad as I had anticipated.
