keep cervix or not

I had breast cancer (it will be two years in aug). All clear mamos since surgery and radiation. I'm having my hyster June 21. I have to decide about my cervix. My dr said since my paps have always been normal if I leave the cervix it will help with support of the pelvic floor. I was fine with that but now I'm starting to think let's just get rid of if, one more organ that cancer can't get to. What do you think?

Re: keep cervix or not

I had my uterus, ovaries and tubes removed on March 25th. The pathologists found cancer so I had to have a second surgery on May 17. They took my cervix then.

My vagina is much shorter than it was before and the sensations during a pelvic exam are much different. I don't have a sex partner but if I did, it would significantly change my sex life. I'm also having much more vaginal dryness and discomfort around my bladder which may or may not have been caused by removing the cervix.

Is your doctor an oncologist? If not, I think I would consult a GYN oncologist to get another opinion.

In my case, they found cancer in the cervix so I felt I didn't have a choice. If I did have a choice, esp. knowing what I know now, I would have kept it.

One other thing I remembered - my GYN oncologist told me that if they remove the uterus in one surgery and then go back later to remove the cervix, there's a greater risk they'll damage the bladder or rectum. So that's another thing to think about it.

I'm learning the hard way that there just aren't any easy answers with this stuff.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
