Pooping with catheter/ catheter at home

I am 4 days post op from a vaginal hysterectomy and I finally pooped, but had to strain and I am afraid that I hurt something with the straining. I also want to see if straining can bother the catheter. Has anybody else had issues of this after a vaginal hyster? Did anyone else have to go home with a catheter because they couldn't pee?

Re: Pooping with catheter/ catheter at home

I think my catheter was removed the day after surgery & I was up & down a few times using the bathroom. I was a bit teed off that I was put on an all liquid diet the first day, but I did advance quickly through the diet stages-maybe a little too fast. I had to pass gas & have a bm before I could go home. I was told to keep drinking LOTS of fluids, keep up w/the stool softeners & do what I could to "keep everything moving". Believe me, when I didn't follow those directions-I was sorry! I learned very quickly how to "stew" prunes & to keep prune juice in my fridge. I also cut back quite a bit on my portion sizes, just so there wouldn't be too much stuff to digest & also so as not to gain weight, since it will be awhile before I can get back to my full range of activities.

Hope you feel better soon. Elimination problems are a real drag.

Re: Pooping with catheter/ catheter at home

I had a catheter at home as well for one week. However, I didn't start having BM's post op until about day 6-7. I did find it difficult to relax and properly have a bm with the catheter in, but luckily I had the catheter out soon after my first BM. When do you get yours out?

Re: Pooping with catheter/ catheter at home

My surgery was Wednesday the 16th and I just came home yesterday and I cannot get the catheter out until Tuesday morning. I cannot wait to get it out. It is so uncomfortable and it is becoming irritated. Other than that my recovery is going well.

Re: Pooping with catheter/ catheter at home

I still have mine too because of extensive repair to my bladder during my surgery on 6/14. I will have mine removed on Monday and I can't even think of having a bm with this thing in. I'm just counting the days until I can get rid of it!

Re: Pooping with catheter/ catheter at home

I too had to come home for a week with a catheter. My doctor told me to use stool softners and they worked for me. I had my first BM 5 days after surgery. It does feel very strange going with a catheter. After the first time of going, it does get easier.

Hope you feel better soon!
