Re: estring usage

Hi I haven't used Estring but I do use Vagifem on occasion, and it's the exact same hormone delivered vaginally, just in tablet form rather than a continuous delivery ring. It should not cause any side effects - I have never had any from Vagifem. The estrogen stays in the vaginal walls for the most part.

I've had breast cancer twice and am on not only the Vagifem but also systemic estrogen (patches). My oncologist prescribes Vagifem or Estring to all her patients with dryness problems.

There is no conclusive evidence showing that estrogen replacement, whether vaginal or systemic, causes an increase in breast cancer rates. The HRT associated with a higher rate of breast cancer in the WHI study was Prempro, which is Premarin (conjugated equine estrogens) plus the synthetic progestin called Provera. The group on Premarin alone in that study did not have the rate increase, leading to the conclusion that it's the Provera that is associated with the increased rate of breast cancer diagnosis.

However, unopposed systemic estrogen use can aggravate fibrocystic breasts in women who are susceptible to it. Fibrocystic breast condition is not related to cancer in any way but can be uncomfortable and can lead to having to have 'second look' mammograms or even biopsies to rule out cancer. Using a little natural progesterone can relieve the condition for many women; I use it for that purpose.

I hope this helps.

-Linda

Re: estring usage

wow, thanks so much,, that was great info and made me feel a lot more comfortable regarding the use of estring. I dont have breast cancer, but have had 2 lumpectomies due to hyperplasia/displasia.... breast cancer runs heavily in my family.. my mom, sister, aunt. I take tamoxofen to hopefully prevent any future issues.. and was so worried about the estrogen use. If you have any further info I would love to hear it
