Recovery location

Apparently when I have something tossing around in my head it helps to put it here and get other's input (at least it has so far).

I have no date yet for my surgery due to my waiting to see one more Dr. but I am a person that has to plan the heck out of everything so I am trying to figure out my recovery location. Oh, additional info 42 yo and unmarried.

I recently sold my home and have not found a new place to live so I am currently staying with my father until I find my dream home (ha, I am finding that it does not exist). I am staying on the second floor of his house and pretty much have to stay there because I am highly allergic to his cat. I will not be able to go spend time in the living room on the couch during recovery without being contaminated by the cat, I can stay there for short periods of time but I generally watch a tv show with him in the evening and then change my clothes so that I do not make the mistake of sitting on my bed and getting cat fur all over it. So I will be pretty much trapped in 2 bedrooms upstairs unless I want to be changing my clothes all the time. I also hate that I would have him taking time off from work too.
-OR-
Do I want to go spend some time and recover with my sister and her family who live 1 hour and 45 minutes away. They just moved into a nice big house out in the woods - very relaxing location. She also does not work outside of the home more than a few 1/2 days a week. However, the draw backs are the distance away from home and doctors, 3 children between 3 and 6 and the imposing on my sister and her husband.

OK, looking for feedback or other suggestions.

Thanks for reading ---L

Re: Recovery location

Perhaps you could do a little of both. Stay at your dad's for the first few days until you feel well enough to travel and then go stay with your sis.

How active are her kids? If your sister has offered, then you are not imposing. The relaxing house in the woods sounds wonderful!!

Good luck!

Re: Recovery location

My date is 8/4. I live alone. I will have to move in with my Mom and Stepfather for a few weeks. I also have to bring my cat. At least they have central air and a 52in plasma on the wall. I can't wait until I can come home.

Re: Recovery location

Are you going to have to go up and down the stairs alot...because that worries me...I was told to avoid stairs at all costs at first.

Re: Recovery location

Ibot,

Yikes. I faced a similar dilemma. My housemate had 3 cats and two kids. I have bad cat allergies and the idea of being cooped up in my hotbox of a room made recovery look like a nightmare. Then OUT OF THE BLUE a friend with a studio let me use it for the first four weeks of my recovery.

Maybe there are other alternatives you have yet to consider? Any friends who might let you crash at their place for the first two or three weeks?

Will you have contact with other people besides your dad if you stay with him? Will your friends be willing to trek out to your sisters place? How much does isolation bother you? How much do little kids bother you? I'd figure out which situation is going to bug you the least and pursue that one. I also like the idea of splitting your time up between the two. With an undetermined surgery date, you have a lot of time to make plans and set things up to your liking.
