PCOS--should I ask ovaries to get taken out too?

My dr so far is doing just the uterus, but I've had a nagging question about the ovaries....I have a history of ovarian cysts (I have PCOS). I'm 34, so not sure I want to go to full blown menopause so fast, but I also know that I don't want more surgeries down the road. Cervix is staying.

How did you ladies decide/did you decide about the ovaries?

What do your Doctors advise? Having your ovaries removed will not cure PCOS, but if you have a lot of problems with ovarian cysts and severe pain with it, then you may want to consider getting them removed.

If you don't have them removed, then you may need to be on a bcp to regulate the ovaries and prevent further cysts. If you have your ovaries removed, you will likely need (at 34 years old) to be on HRT to replace what your ovaries were making for you.

I kept my cervix, and have problems with painful cervical cysts related to the pcos. You may want to think about that. The cervix is a part of the uterus, and whatever is affecting your uterus, can also eventually affect your cervix. Having your cervix removed at a later date is another major surgery with a long recovery.

Have you seen an Endocrinologist? They know the most about PCOS, and would be able to best take your unique set of circumstances into consideration to advise you what is best for you.

I wish you the best.

Re: PCOS--should I ask ovaries to get taken out too?

Hi Kay! My doctor has not told me I need to get them out. She's the one that found my PCOS and has been managing it. My endocrinologist has been taking care of the hypothyroidism/thyroid nodules and the testosterone levels associated w/PCOS.

I should probably give them a call though and see what their opinion is on the subject. I haven't had problems with my cervix, but I've had YEARS worth of cysts (not constantly but frequent enough). I can't take BCPs because I always seem to react badly to them (weight gain, really moody, etc).

I just want to avoid another surgery later. Don't mind the HRTs I guess. More worried about osteoporosis considering I'm on chronic steroid therapy for my lupus.

I would definitely give the Endocrinologist a call. Doesn't hurt to cover all the bases.

If you opt to keep the ovaries now, and decide later to have them removed, it is a much simpler surgery, than the hysterectomy.

Sounds like you are getting good care.

Keep us posted.
