Hrt and cystic breasts

Hi, I am 10 months post op hysterectomy, only 1 ovary remaining. I have been having terrible hot flashes. I have tried natural remedies to no avail. Dr prescribed Estradot 25cured hot flashes but made cystic breasts unbearable. Went to walk in clinic to get prometrium (someone said this would help) the Dr there was very nice and prescribed it even though he did not think I needed it because I no longer have a uterus. Problem is the Pharmacist refused to fill it once he found out I in fact had no uterus. My OB/GYN is away on holidays so I can't even get him to give the pharmacist authorization to fill it. Will prometrium in fact work for the cystic breast when used in congunction with the estrogen patch or am I just wasting my time. If so does anyone have any other ideas that can manage my hot flashes and cystic breasts Thank you

Re: Hrt and cystic breasts

First, I don't believe the pharmacist has the authority to refuse to fill your prescription. That doesn't make any sense. Pharmacists do not decide what medications patients need, their doctors do.

Be that as it may, you can go buy some good OTC progesterone cream at the health food store and use it anyway. Many of us who no longer have a uterus use progesterone cream; we just use it differently than women with a uterus, so the directions on the package won't apply to you. Rather than cycling, we use a small amount every day (actually most of us use it in the evening).

When looking at the progesterone creams, do not be taken in by anything that says "wild yam cream". While it's true that some progesterone is made from wild yam sources, our bodies are unable to convert wild yam to progesterone. Look for "USP Progesterone" on the ingredients list, and it's best if they state the amount as more than 400mg per ounce of cream (the one I use is 750mg/ounce).

Progesterone won't take care of your hot flashes, though -- for that you'll want the Estradot. I hope you still have the prescription for it.

s,
-Linda
