Natural hormones

I have been very concerned about taking hormones because of the cancer issue. We have a history of breast cancer in our family and taking hormones makes me nervous. I have been checking into natural hormone creams. Has anyone taken them and what was the result?

Re: Natural hormones

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "natural hormone creams". Do you mean compounded HRTs? If so, those are bioidentical hormones individually mixed by a compounding pharmacist. They're the exact same hormones, though, as in the pharmaceutically produced bioidentical HRTs such as the patches, Estrace pills and Prometrium.

If you're referring to plant estrogens (phytoestrogens), imho they are really not very effective at treating the symptoms of surgical menopause.

By the way, there is no evidence that estrogen-only HRT causes breast cancer. Any form of estrogen, even plant estrogens, can encourage the growth of existing cancers, but they don't cause it. The HRT that showed a slightly higher risk of breast cancer in the infamous WHI study was Prempro, a combination of Premarin (conjugated equine estrogens) plus the synthetic progestin Provera. Since the women on Premarin alone did not have the increased risk, it's concluded that it was the progestin called Provera that increased the risk.

I've been using bioidentical HRTs since 2002 despite having had breast cancer. I'm cancer-free four years now.

By the way, although family history is a risk factor for breast cancer, it is only one of many, and in fact most women who are diagnosed with breast cancer, myself included, had no prior family history but did have other risk factors (in my case, it was several years of Provera use).

There are some good links to helpful information about breast cancer risk and hormones in our Resource Links directory; you might want to browse through there and then discuss your options with your doctor.

I hope this helps.

Re: Natural hormones

I'm having very good luck with a pill supplement that contains black cohash, plant phytoestrogens, and female hop cones extract, among other things. I am working with my doctor on this and this product is what he well as calcium and vitamin D 'chews'.

I've noticed that diet seems to be playing a role in this whole surgical menopause thing as well. I'm only six weeks out but I've noticed I have more symptoms based on eating patterns. And no more wine/alcohol for me...unless I want to be up all night with night sweats!

I am 44 and had perimenopause prior to maybe that's why I'm doing so well now??? I don't know but, hormonally I feel so much better now !

Good luck.
