3-26-09 Is It too late to start HRT

Hi everyone!
Been taking estroven for more than a year now and it does help take the edge off but still suffering a lot of meno symptoms.Hot flashes and insomnia are still pretty life altering but better than before. The major thing that's concerning me is the sexual side effects of my surgery. Its REALLY depressing! So Ive been thinking and wondering If its too late or if too much time has passed to start on something? When I try to raise the subject with my main doc he just avoids the question.Maybe he figures ive survived a year and a half without them,he just prefers I stay that way,I dont know.I suppose my Gyn is more suited for the question.I just wonder if It would be of benefit this far out or if its too late to be effective?

I don't think it's ever too late. If what you're using isn't doing the trick, I'd ask to change dose or change delivery method. Why not?

Ask your gyn as they feel more comfortable prescribing HRT.

Re: 3-26-09 Is It too late to start HRT

Hi!

There are many on this site who have delayed starting hormones for different reasons. I don't think it's too late for you to start taking them if that's what you want to do and if you don't have any medical reasons why you shouldn't or can't use hormone therapy.

Why not call another doctor and get a second opinion? Some doctors just aren't knowledgeable about the hormone needs of those of us in surgical menopause but there are plenty of doctors who are. Maybe you could call your gynecologist to ask if s/he is willing to prescribe them and go from there.

Good luck with this and keep us posted on what happens, okay?

Re: 3-26-09 Is It too late to start HRT

aerolyn,

I had sexual side effects too after my surgery. Waited several months to see my gyno, my poor husband has been so patient. Don't know if you have seen your gyno yet, but mine checked my testosterone levels, and Bingo! I was low. I am now taking Bioidentical hrt (cream) for testosterone and hoping this will help. I am also worried that I waited too long and that there may be some sort of ireversable (sp?) damage, as i have no desire to even be close to my husband. I am very troubled by my mood issues as well . It seems I am very easily irritated-and the is so not me- especially at my man. I am definitely not the same person I was before the surgery. I have lost what seems to be my inner happiness(don't know how else to describe it), but I am not sure all of this is due to surgery. I kept my left ovary, and my dr. said the right one was such a mangled mess that he doubts it was even functioning. My lab results( fsh?) were normal, Dr. said I was not in menopause, I do not have night sweats or hot flashes. He was going to perscribe a very low dose of Bi-est, but crossed it out after I told him this, so apparently I was on the low side of "normal" I don't know what to do. I don't want to take the estrogen if I don't need it. But I can't live like this either. Especially if it is effecting my marriage. Is hormonal, or am I going thru some sort of post surgical depression? Neither option sounds like much fun.
