Estrogen and Dementia anyone know the answer

Does anyone know for sure or have you asked your doctor if Estrogen causes Dementia..this has become a major concern as we just put my Aunt in an assisted living home with it ..it is heart breaking and it sickens me to think estrogen can cause it as its a warning or side affect listed on the Viville dot insert..I have even thought about going to a neurologist just to get a straight answer..and find if there is anything to prevent itor help prevent it..Thanks Tina

Funny thing my Aunt has never been on Estrogen but was a heavy smoker for 50 yrs and has had chemo for bladder cancer..my mother took estrogen for27 yrs and is 80 and is mentally fine..GO FIGURE??

Re: Estrogen and Dementia anyone know the answer

Actually my GYN told me some studies show keeping your ovaries rather than having them removed might prevent dementia/are associated with lower incidence of dementia. For what that's worth. Really we don't know all that's involved in causing dementia but its probably not just one thing. I'm sorry, it is so hard to deal with that situation. Sending hugs.

Re: Estrogen and Dementia anyone know the answer

The relationship between estrogens and dementia is still not all that well understood. There have been studies linking higher endogenous (ie not from HRT) estradiol levels with dementia in elderly women; however, studies on exogenous (through HRT) estradiol levels and dementia seem to indicate that estradiol has a protective effect.

This article pretty well sums it up for now:

Hope this helps.

Re: Estrogen and Dementia anyone know the answer

Actually, the studies I've read says that taking HRT shows a very slight increase in dementia.

I think, like everything else, it depends on the person. The luck of the draw as it were.

My Mom has taken it since her hysterectomy 20 years ago, is 83 this year and shows no signs of stopping physically or mentally. My aunt took it and has so many health problems it's unimaginable (she's younger). She also had BC and had to stop it a few years ago.

My dh mom did not take it and started declining noticeably mentally about the age of 80. However, she does not have osteo and has nothing physically wrong.
