Suggestions please :/

At my 1 week postop apppointment after LSH-BSO my doctor suggested HRT. Because of blood pressure issues he doesn't recommend oral meds and gave me a sample of Elestrin gel. I came home and checked with my prescription drug plan and this stuff is outrageous!!! If I have it auto shipped to me a 90 day supply is almost $400 . He told me I could call him back if it was too expensive but I would like to have some suggestions from my "sisters" first. I got two sample bottles so that should give me some time to do some research. Thanks for any help.

Re: Suggestions please :/

Hi Patsy!

That really is expensive. There are quite a few transdermal estrogens you can consider and hopefully one will be more affordable. The one I have been using for years is Vivelle Dot. It's an estrogen patch which is changed twice a week and is bio-identical estradiol, the same estrogen that is in the sample Elestrin you have. Another popular estrogen patch is Climara. That one is changed once a week. There is a generic for Climara but not for Vivelle Dot. The generic patch is thicker, larger and from what I've read, tends not to stick as well as the name brand patches.

Other bio-identical transdermal options that I can think of off the top of my head which you could consider at this early stage of your recovery are EstroGel, Divigel, Evamist and Estrasorb. If your pharmacy has a feature where you can do online price checks, it would be an easy way to find one which may be more affordable.

There are additional hormone therapy options listed in this link from the Resource Database: Menopause Hormone Replacement Options.

Good luck and please let us know what you decide to try.
