How do I know if I need HRT?

I am 4 weeks post-op and doing fairly well. I am 54 years old and had not had a period for 18 months and started having problems. I kept my cervix. Menopause symptoms were not too bad before the problems. The last couple days people have asked if I am using HRT. I said no. My doctor has not said much on the subject. Why would I need it and how will I know?

Re: How do I know if I need HRT?

Hi (((Ruperts0303)))

I just glanced at your survey, but it did not say if you kept your ovaries or not. Even after menopause, we can still benefit from the smaller amounts of estrogen that our ovaries provide. Women who have already experienced menopause can sometimes have these symptoms after surgery if they did have their ovaries removed (or if they kept one or both, for that matter). I am glad that you are doing well with your recovery. Take care!

Re: How do I know if I need HRT?

I had never taken anything either and am 56. At about 3 weeks i felt very blue and weepy. I know some depression is common but just felt like it was more than that. Also had some mild hot flashes at night which were new. I started estratest hs and have seen a huge difference is how I feel. In fact, now that I have given it some time, i feel better than I have in a long time. For me it was almost more of a quality of life thing. I never thought I would take HRT but at this point I am glad I started.

Re: How do I know if I need HRT?

If you feel no need to take HRT you are lucky. I never took it before, but now my symptoms are so much worse, and some are new. Clearly my atrophied overies were still doing something for me. But Some ladies see no difference and you might not. I didn't expect to see a difference, but I did.

Re: How do I know if I need HRT?

I too was wondering if my ovaries were still producing anything, although blood test before surgery showed I was already menopausal. At pre-op visit the Dr. said I would know within 24 hours if I needed hormones. I felt one apparent hot flash the day after surgery, but that could also have been due to dehydration or an anesthesia side effect. No more hot flashes since then.

Re: How do I know if I need HRT?

The hot flashes have been pretty intense the last few days. I am going to give it another week and check with my Dr. and weigh my options.
