I need comprehensive HRT info

that covers all the options, and compares them all as to effectiveness, COST, side effects. I see so many sources of info my head is spinning. I tried estrogen pills for 3 days they made me sick, I'm about to try vivelle patch and it looks like my insurance may not cover it YIKES! I'm 44 so I"m looking at being on hormones a long time. I'm at 6 weeks post op and really want to get started with HRT wish I had a clue

Re: I need comprehensive HRT info

I'm not an expert but I have one prelim----get a list of what your insurance covers. Then find what your local pharmacies have as bargains or whatever. And see also if the drug co can offer help if your ins won't. I say this because whatever you decide, realistically, you'll want coverage for. So maybe Climara patch is covered but not Vivelle. Or only generics, whatever. But then you can narrow things a bit. I'm not sure where the best current info is but that might save you some time in the long run. I know there are some articles on the hormone jungle site maybe they would help? Is your Dr able to help discuss HRT with you? Seems part of this should be available from them.

Re: I need comprehensive HRT info

It would be nice to know in advance if a particular hormone therapy product would be effective but unfortunately, there's no way to know if it will be effective for you without trying it. Maybe your doctor can give you some free samples of various products to try so you can see which you prefer before committing to a prescription.

The cost can vary from pharmacy to pharmacy so once you find something you like, call about the pricing. Of course if you have insurance that tiers prescriptions, you'll need to take that into consideration as well.

Did your doctor discuss using progesterone along with estrogen because of your endometriosis diagnosis? Since endometriosis is "fed" by estrogen it isn't unusual for doctors to also prescribe progesterone (or synthetic progestin) as it can counteract the effects that estrogen has on any endometriosis that might still be present.

From the Resource Database, here is a link to a comprehensive list of hormone therapy products for you to research: Menopause Hormone Replacement Options.

Good luck with this and please let us know if you have other questions or concerns. Let us know what you decide to use, too!

Re: I need comprehensive HRT info

thank you both, that is helpful. wish i had thought to ask for samples in the first place, if the rx doesn't work out the money is down the drain. my doc didn't recommend progesterone, but she was also the surgeon, and the hrt may not be her expertise. I will look into it thanks, wasn't aware of the endo connection.
