Estrogen levels tested by doctor post-hyst, is my result normal?

I there. I am 12 weeks post op. I kept one ovary, but kept in mind that if it failed I would do HRT. I have had peeling nails, falling out hair, moodiness, and extreme fatigue. My doctor did a round of tests. I am anemic, which I always have been. My thyroid came back great, and also negative for diabetes. She also tested my hormones. My FSH level was 10, which she said was normal (between 2-23 is normal -- is what she said). My concern is my estrogen result. My estrogen came back at 19. She said the normal is 12-400. I asked her "well wouldn't you say I am on the LOW side of normal... like my one ovary is failing" and she said that it is fine and they would not do anything (HRT) at this point. Everything I have read online says that 19 is a very low amount of estrogen. Does anyone know? Any suggestions?

Re: Estrogen levels tested by doctor post-hyst, is my result normal?

Hi Jennifer,

I had a TAH and kept my ovaries, but then found that I was getting night sweats, pelvic pain and my eyelashes falling out. My doctor sent me for a blood test and said I'd gone into surgical menopause and my ovaries weren't working. The blood test results were FSH level of 168 and Estradiol level of <50, both consistent with being post menopausal. I think that FSH levels increase after menopause and estradiol levels decrease.

He put me on to HRT and I had a 25mg patch. I asked him to do a blood test to check my hormone levels just as a matter of interest. My estradiol level then came back at 88. My doctor said this was still a post menopausal level and he would expect a pre menopausal level to be over 200. He upped me to 50mg patches and my levels are now around the 200 mark.

I know the estrogen levels vary throughout your cycle, but 19 does seem very low - if the measurement is the same as the one I had. With the symptoms you're having as well, I would have thought she would have put you on to HRT to see if it makes a difference. My doctor said they tend to treat the symptoms rather than going by the hormone levels in blood tests. They start you on the lowest dose possible and see if that helps, then increase the dosage if you are still having problems. I'm not a doctor, but I would be surprised if all the symptoms you are having are due to you being anemic.

numbers are relative-- some women feel well at say 100, some 300, some do ok at 50.
mine was 48 and I felt really fatigued and started having sexual problems. Maybe go to a dr. who goes more by symptoms than numbers.

Hi Ann,
Do you mind if I ask what type of sexual problems? I am feeling really fatigued and moody off and on. Sexual problems are bad dryness and lack of libido. Are you on HRT?
