Hysterectomy complete now what?

Now that the so called worst is over now what do we do about hormone replacement. Bad enough I had to receive Lovonox injection for blood clots I did not have; doctor saays its just a precaution because I had to have my surgery an hour away from home. Do we need to have both hormones replacement? If not, which one is most important to have? Yes, I know my doctor will explain it to me but I get better info from my peers (women) verusus doctor (a man...we have no women in this area of expertise in this part of town).

Re: Hysterectomy complete now what?

Here is some info from the Mayo Clinic to see if HRT is right for you:

I took the vivelle dot patch because I had awful hotflashes and sweats. I would have not taken anything if I had not had symptoms. Many of us here take it for symptoms that are moderate to severe and affect our quality of life. HRT is not intended to be taken as preventative medicine.

Re: Hysterectomy complete now what?

And now your journey into the confusing world of HRT begins (if HRT is what you choose).

The best advice I can give you is to:
-have patience
-listen to your body
-use a dr you trust who you feel listens to you

Question - Hysterectomy complete now what? Re: Hysterectomy complete now what?

I thought HRT was automatic. What happens without HRTs?

Re: Hysterectomy complete now what?

What happens without HRT's. I have hypothyroidism and am always cold. It has only been a couple of days though. I am not in so much pain as I thought but I had my sisters' advice (HYSTER SISTERS) and followed everything to the letter. Muchas Gracias senoras and senioritas.

It's not automatic; some women choose not to pursue it or some are advised against it by their dr's.

Without HRT your body goes into menopause. I know there are some articles on the site that talk about HRT vs no HRT. I recommend reading them.

Here, have a look at the article list.

Re: Hysterectomy complete now what?

Hi Fefe63, This is Anncal63 and I had my TAH in july of 2003 I have not taken hormone therepy and I am now in MENOPAUSE. It is so hot all the time and I sweat like a Monkey up a Tree. Lol. I have gotten a chillo pillow and take Melatonin natural over the counter, my dr agrees with thiss, but i am so lost as to what comes next. Maybe this is the pause in menopause. If you find something that helps w/ flashes please pass it on. I feel better talking to these women who can relate.
If you need to vent im here. Nice to talk to you.

Re: Hysterectomy complete now what?

Do you see an Endocrinologist for your hypothyroid? If not, this might be a good time to see one. They are the hormone experts and could tell you what you need concerning HRT, and what you don't need. Every time you adjust the estrogen, the thyroid has to be tested and possibly readjusted as well. IT can get a little tricky, but I have found it is very worth seeing a who is knowledgeable about how the hormones all work together.

Re: Hysterectomy complete now what?

I opted not to do HRT and have been dealing with the menopause issues on my own. I added extra calcium/Vit D
to my daily multi-vitamin. I also take Estroven PM(otc) and that helps with the night sweats and sleeping. I don't know if you can take Estroven but it does come in different types and can be bought in most stores. I only use the PM version because I couldn't sleep.

Re: Hysterectomy complete now what?

It's been close to 5 weeks Post Op and so far I've had minimal hot flashes. I'm taking vitamins (Lydia Pinkham) that my mother used to take when she was going through menopause years ago, yep, these pills have been around since I was very young. She has since passed away, but always had a lot of faith in them and suggested I take them when my time came (which came sooner than I anticipated). So I decided to start taking them along with Caltrate, before the surgery, and they have done wonders for me. But it's like everything else, something like this can work for me and not for someone else. I'll continue taking these as long as I have to!!!
