Should I call the doctor?

Today makes day number 5 after surgery for me. The doctor sent me home with a prescription for 30 percocet and 25 phenergan. I'm down to about 5 percocet and 9 phenergan. I've always had an unusually high tolerance to medication. The thing is I'm still hurting pretty badly and since today marks the start of me being on my own with my kids most of the day I'm having to be up and around alot more and it's making me feel a little more pain than I have been feeling. Do you think it would be ok to call the docs office and ask for a refill on my pain meds? I feel like I should try to get off them as soon as possible but I just can't take this pain.

Re: Should I call the doctor?

You might want to call and see if the doc might be willing to try something else for pain control. Are you taking them as prescribed? Also....given that you are fast depleting your phenegrams....is it safe to assume that the pain meds make you nauseous? My vote would be call the doc and see if he can call you in something that may be more effective.

Re: Should I call the doctor?

it is definately too soon to be off pain meds, he will completely understand you are out already. Call him now. I was on pain meds before surg and had to yell to be given something stronger not weaker. But when I called back they were completely understanding. Call him now, it is harder to get caught up if you run out than just staying on them evenly. I am 12 days felling great and still taking one or two day, so 5 days is way too soon. Good luck, sounds like your doing pretty good

Re: Should I call the doctor?

You are only 5 days out from surgery so I say if you need the pain pills then by all means take them. So yes, call your Dr. for a refill.

Re: Should I call the doctor?

Consider also taking ibuprofen or Aleve on a schedule plus your percocet, for better pain control plus to possibly need less. You can ask your Dr about it when you call. My Dr suggested it and said the pain is mainly inflammation related so they would help a lot----and they did. I hope your pain is better soon.

Re: Should I call the doctor?

I agree that the ibuprofen helps. I had my TVH on a Tuesday, was home Wed afternoon and by that Friday I had stopped taking the pain meds from the doctor opting just to take ibuprofen. I hate the way prescription meds make me feel, so I was determined to stop taking them as soon as the pain subsided. There was still minor discomfort ...but the ibuprofen helped alot. I also found that ice packs worked wonders Good luck!

Re: Should I call the doctor?

They also told me that they have a TON of pain med options, so maybe something else will work better for you? I really liked when I found something that worked, to drift off to sleep and not be in that pain was heavenly.
Do call. And please take care of yourself!!!

Re: Should I call the doctor?

I was on pain meds around the clock for 2 full weeks. As well as using Ibuprophen as others have suggested. Call your doc and see what he says. Hope you get some relief soon!

Re: Should I call the doctor?

My doctor told me if I ran out and need something to get Advil or motrin and take 3 or 4 tabs.

Re: Should I call the doctor?

Thank you everyone. I called and when my husband gets home he's going to go up to the city to the office and get a refill. I'm also going to start taking motrin as well and see if that helps.
