Odd, personal question about BMs

Is it okay to "push" to try to have a BM? I have always had chronic constipation and still have it, kind of. It's hard for me to get it to come out, but once it starts it's soft and slides out easy. It's like it's just stuck in there somehow and I need to put some gentle pressure to coax it out. Is it okay to apply that pressure? It's a slow, steady pressure, not just all-out pushing, but my DH said it probably wasn't a good idea to do it.

Wow, TMI I know but I had to ask.

Re: Odd, personal question about BMs

Don't push if it hurts to do so. I see your about 10 days into your recovery. I noticed at about that time that I was able to put in a little pressure -- but not much at all cause it would hurt. There's a lot of healing taking place inside so be very careful. You don't want to put any stress on the stitches that are inside of you. Best bet would be to keep up with stool softners -- your Dr. should have given you a prescription for those or directions for taking over the counter ones. And also watch your diet carefully.
Hope this helps -- Good Luck to you!

Re: Odd, personal question about BMs

I had read here a lot not to push so early so you do not hurt anything inside. Are you taking stool softeners? You want to make sure you are getting plenty of water. I used prunes, applesauce & make sure you get enough fiber. I know it is not fun but before pushing, I would try what you can to make it come out on its own. Best wishes.

Re: Odd, personal question about BMs

Gentle pushing....but not straining if it hurts a lot....I had to do some gentle "straining" to get things moving too....and, sorry it this is TIM, but I actually used some KY jelly in there...just put some on my finger and kind of lubed things up a bit....yuck...but it helped....

and i was eating prunes every day, throughout the day as well as finally taking some colace around 2 weeks post op that helped a lot too...

hang in there! and I hope you healing goes smoothly

Re: Odd, personal question about BMs

I know how you feel, because I've been experiencing the same thing. I wouldn't push very much right now because it's still early in your recovery. I've found that what works really well for me is taking a dose of Metamucil once a day and drinking LOTS of water.

Re: Odd, personal question about BMs

I forgot to say that I've been taking stool softeners, which is why the BM isn't too hard to get out, once it starts coming. It just needs a little extra push to get out.

Re: Odd, personal question about BMs

If your being gentle it probably isn't any problem. Just be very gentle.

Re: Odd, personal question about BMs

Call your doctor. I was told by the nurse to take 1 cc's of Mineral Water and I had to take 1 suppository.

Are you taking your 2 laxatives a day with 2 stool softeners? Also, what helped for me was drinking Prune juice, eating dried plums and drinking water, 8 glasses a day.

Re: Odd, personal question about BMs

I've had a similar issue since my surgery. I've used a solution similar to LoveTheOcean's - Preparation H if I find I have any swelling, Vaseline, KY or a little mineral oil if I don't have any swelling. And while this sounds strange, after the application of whichever I've used, I read a book to get myself to relax a little bit. I'm beginning to think that the book keeps me from "thinking" too much about the "problem".

Hope this helps!
