High Levels of Estradiol on HRT - Ovaries Waking Up?

Hi,

I had a TAH in November 2009 and kept my ovaries. After surgery I had menopausal symptoms and my doctor did a blood test which showed my estradiol levels were <50 and he said I'd gone into surgical menopause as my ovaries had stopped working. He started me on a 25 Estraderm patch and after a few months did another blood test which showed my estradiol levels were then 88. The doctor thought I should be at a level of around 200, so upped my HRT dosage to the Estraderm 50 patch. The next blood test showed my estradiol level at 216, which he was happy with.

A few weeks ago I was having problems with the Estraderm patch as it was causing contact dermatitis, so I switched to Evorel 50 (think this is only in the UK not the US, but apparently it's hypo-allergenic). I've also been having very sore/tender breasts, more headaches than usual, insomnia and spots on my face, so I asked the doctor about checking my estradiol levels again. I've just been in to see him today and found that my estradiol levels are now 1,000 which is far too high, he said he'd expect me to be in the range of bewteen 200 and 500. It explains the symptoms I've been having. He's now putting me back to an Evorel 25 patch and I'll be having another blood test in 4 weeks to see what's happening.

Sorry about all the explanation, I'll get round to the questions now! Does anyone know what is 'normal' for estradiol levels? Do you think this might mean that my ovaries are waking up again, after being on strike for the last 9 months after my hyst? I'm a bit worried about having an estradiol level of 1,000 and hope that it won't cause me any long term problems - can you 'overdose' on estradiol?? I would be quite happy to stop my HRT and see what happens, but I suppose it's more sensible to lower the dose of the patch, wait for that to take effect and then have another blood test to see what's happening. The high reading might also have been down to the dermatitis as the hormone was being transferred through inflamed/broken skin. Guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Re: High Levels of Estradiol on HRT - Ovaries Waking Up?

what about trying a round of Natural Progesterone cream?
or Prometrium. That offsets the estrogen's effects. Maybe that would help. Yes, 1000 seems very high.
Mine barely gets near one hundred .. You can have too much estrogen, with sore breasts, crying, etc.
I buy my natural progesterone over the internet. or you can get a prescription progesterone which is bioidentical called prometrium or a vaginal one called crinone.

Re: High Levels of Estradiol on HRT - Ovaries Waking Up?

Thanks Ann, I'll talk to my doctor about a natural progesterone cream next time I see him. I had read about it online and have Dr Hotze's book about estrogen dominance, but I was so surprised about the 1,000 level yesterday I forgot to ask him about it! I'll write it down for next time so I don't forget.

Sarah.
