Anyone out there skipped the HRT and doing fine without?

I am 54 and have been in menopause for three years. During that time I have really never had much in the way of hot flashes or night sweats. The only thing I noticed was an increase in my overall thermostat. I just run warmer than before menopause. When I had my Hysterectomy my doctor removed my ovaries because he said they would just wither up and die anyway and I could avoid any chance of ovarian cancer since he had seen 4 women come in with cancer in the last two months. He started me on Premarin in the fifth week of recovery. I really didn't want to take hRT because I have not had hot flashes and night sweats before surgery or after. I go back to see my dr. next week and will ask how long I have to be on the Premarin. I don't see the need for it if I am not having any symptoms. My concern is more the cost of the med and the fact I already take so many pills for diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol. I can't afford one more med. Re: Anyone out there skipped the HRT and doing fine without?

I have completely skipped the HRT and are doing fine so far, and I can think of at least 3 friends who are doing well. (All had ovaries removed and no HRT).I am almost 1 year post hyst. The emotional aspects of the recovery were slow, but I think I have adjusted.

I do take supplements. One of my friends who avoids HRT using nothing (no supplements), just tries to eat healty.

Hope this helps.

Re: Anyone out there skipped the HRT and doing fine without?

I had my TAH/BSO eleven years ago. Shortly after that I had a DVT and for that reason could not start HRT. For the first four or five years or so I was on Effexor to help alleviate hot flashes and night sweats. After weaning myself off Effexor I found that I still had hot flashes but not as bad as before.

That said, I have numerous problems. I have pain in my back and in my joints that is quite dibilitating. I have been in the hospital twice with atrial fibrillation. I'm not sure if I'd feel better if I were taking some form of HRT, but I tend to think my problems wouldn't be so bad if I were. If I had the choice, I would be taking hormones.

As far as the cost of HRT, Walgreen's and Target have a program where you can purchase generic brands for $4 a month. Ask your doctor about it.
