string sticking out of incision

I am 4 weeks post-op. My incisions have all healed (surgical glue has come off), but now that the glue is off I have discovered a piece of string (about 1/8 inch long) hanging out of one of my incisions. I have tried pulling it out but it hurts because it's stuck in the incision which has healed shut. My question: Should I risk pulling it and tearing the incision, or will it just dissolve like the other sutures inside? It is just weird having a string coming out of my belly.

Re: string sticking out of incision

As much as I'd be tempted to pull ... I really recommend that you call the doc and run it by him/her first. They may tell you to leave it because even at 4 weeks you could still be healing internally. Last thing you want to do is re-open something when it sounds like it is so close to being healed up!

Re: string sticking out of incision

I actually had this happen. Doc told me to leave it, that it will dissolve when everything else dissolves.
Everytime I took a shower, I messed with it, and one day it was gone. As tempting as it is, leave it alone.

Happy Healing

Re: string sticking out of incision

thank you snow white; appreciate the quick reply. I put in a call to the doctor late yesterday afternoon and expect a call back sometime this morning, but of course I also wondered if this had happened to anyone else. I was hoping someone had this experience and they had a quick solution. Guess I'll just have to be patient - not one of my virtues.

Re: string sticking out of incision

agree with the others, don't pull it!

I had part of my incision pop open and got see a lovely roll of knotted up stitches....totally freaked me out!....called the doc, and since it was open and infected they had me come in....ended up being no big deal...he clipped it and then we went on with regular wound care till the place closed up...

It was weird to see though!

Re: string sticking out of incision

I had that happen too. One day it was there. Within a couple days it was gone on its own. I didnt tug on it. If you are healing well, don't jeopardize a good thing!

Re: string sticking out of incision

I have one of those too. 3 incisions from LSH and the left one, the larger of the 3 has one of those stringy things sticking out of the side of it. I asked Dr. today about showering he said it can get wet, just don't scrub it or scratch it. Let it heal. I'm leaving mine. Thank you for your post!
