I wish people would post in this forum. Looking at Weight Loss Surgery in 2010

My whole hysterectomy journey began in May, when I decided I was worth taking care of. After years of attempting to be "all things, to all people" I realized that I was a mess, plus I hadn't seen a doctor for years. My weight had ballooned to 250 and I was having trouble getting around.

I started studying up on the lapband, as well as vertical sleeve weight loss surgery. You see, I attributed all of my blah feelings on being overweight along with "female troubles".

The bariatric surgeon had a ton of required pre-surgical tests after my consultation.. endoscopy, colonoscopy, chest x-ray, mamogram, respitory and ekg, sleep study, ultrasound.. just tons of stuff! I was picking through the list as best I could when I ended up in the ER with what I thought were gas pains, but what was actually gigantic ovarian cysts making their presence known.

Needless to say the weight loss surgery went on the back burner. It would have been "self pay" as my insurance is not the greatest.. as a small business person we just couldn't afford the premiums for <>, etc.

I'm still trying to decide, and I guess a lot hinges on whether I start packing on pounds now.

Your were lucky that everything was benign. I am sure you were very elated to hear this news. I suggest that you concentrate on recouping from this surgery before making a decision on the other. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!Keep us posted.

Re: I wish people would post in this forum!

If its not one thing its another sometimes. I've never had WLS and it used to have so many complications. These days its much better and those I know who have had it are mainly glad but have had mixed results as to success. So I have no advice but to keep researching and maybe find in person or online support groups of those who have had it so you can hear from the "horse's mouth". Probably getting 6-12 mos post hyst--when they say you get full recovery--would help get a better chance of future healing if you opt for a procedure. Best wishes on whatever you decide.

Yes, first things first, for sure. Thanks for that reminder! My priorities have changed a bit, though I am still afraid of blowing up weight-wise!

Re: I wish people would post in this forum. Looking at Weight Loss Surgery

I had gastric bypass surgery 3 years ago. I did well. Then had huge fibroid and began to look preggo. I gave up because I didn't know it was a fibroid. Now ready to put together a plan and lose the weight I gained. It was good for me I had serious health issues that are gone now.
Good luck

Re: I wish people would post in this forum. Looking at Weight Loss Surgery

I had my hyster 4 years ago. I was obese to start with, then I gained more weight. I ended up getting gastric bypass in Dec 2011. I have lost 90 pounds since then, and feel wonderful!

I must say, most people comment that they are cold after weight loss surgery. I was always hot. Ironically my hyster was keeping me warm. (funny) I had stopped taking my estrogen when I had the WLS due to the estrogen being released from the fat cells in such large amounts as the weight started coming off. At 6 months I had to start taking the estrogen again to control the heat issues (plus minor others), and now am more leveled out.

Re: I wish people would post in this forum. Looking at Weight Loss Surgery

Had lap-band in 2009. I have lost 106 lbs and wouldn't change a thing... But I will add that, if you are not willing to follow the rules... Don't have the surgery! I know too many people who had lap-band and have failed to lose weight because they didnt use it right. It is a tool. You have to makr it work.
