Hospital Stay???

Hello all, I have been reading on this site for a couple of days, and I am truely confused. My doctor told me that I would have surgury in the a.m. and then be released in the p.m. as long as there are no complications. Everything I have read from everyones posts has stated that they all had to stay 1 to 2 days. I am just really confused....

Re: Hospital Stay???

hi, it depends on surgery type, what your insurance allows and of course any complications. some laparoscopic are done same day. most others stay one night and abdominal may be more. it really depends on surgery type and that can change if the doc feels patient needs more recovery time.

Re: Hospital Stay???

Every Dr & every patient are different, so with that combination, who knows. I've known day surgery patients that have done very well, though.

Re: Hospital Stay???

I had to meet three conditions to be able to leave the hospital:
The catheter had to be removed and I had to urinate.
My pain had to be under control with oral medication.
I had to be up walking around.

I don't know if that is the same for everyone. I suppose all of those conditions could possibly be met on the same day as the surgery.

Re: Hospital Stay???

Also insurance considers a "day" to be 24 hrs from something, not sure if post op or what, but my day surgery extended overnight and still only considered a day, although it was a day from being out of recovery. My TVH was planned overnight, my BSO was supposedly day surgery. Some Drs do "same day" for some type surgeries but as said previously, you have to wake up, walk, eat, pee, and have good pain control on pills, not IV. I didn't meet those until the next day, myself. If you need to stay they keep you and clear it with your ins. And the rule was someone needed to spend the night with me if I went home same day. They didn't mention that at pre op, so be prepared if you live alone. Best wishes on your surgery and recovery.

Re: Hospital Stay???

I am the same as Artsy-chick had to meet the requirements then i could go home! My surgery was at 11:30am and was discharged the following morning around 10am
I also had a bladder sling put in and i have asthma so i had trouble breathing on my own for a while. even with the extra complications i was only there over night.

Re: Hospital Stay???

I'm having LaVinci at 7:00 a.m., but doc advised today that I'd be overnight. He said on a VERY rare occasion, a patient has gone home the same day.

Mine will be be billed as "day surgery" as long as I leave within 24 hours from the time I get to my room.

Re: Hospital Stay???

I was very nervous as you were about the length of the hospital stay. I stayed for 2 1/2 days after a LAVH. I was on the morphine pump for 24 hours alone. If you aren't ready, share that with your caretakers or have a family member be your advocate.

You should be fine and I would hope that the medical staff will do what is best for you! You might want to call your insurance company. That gave me great peace of mind when they told me the length of my stay was up to my caregivers and me.
