How long do your natural hormones stay?

I guess it is a good idea to have a hormone test. I remember years ago seeing an OTC hormone test. They worked like a pregnancy test. I have read about hormones being stored in your body. I am surprised how many women have not gone through menopause in their fifties. I had one ovary removed with a cyst when I was 22. I am 47 and had two periods in 2008 and two more in 2009. I haven't had any this year and most of my hot flashes were during 2008 and 2009. My doctor is going to remove my last ovary and I guess I have pretty much used it up. I am kinda experiencing some mild hot flashes but I think it is mostly stress. I don't think any kind of hormone treatment will be necessary...I hope. So does anyone else have any opinion on how long your natural hormones stay after menopause?

Re: How long do your natural hormones stay?

Your ovaries can still produce in small amounts sometimes. I was a few yrs post menopause but still saw a difference after the BSO---something I hadn't expected. So I guess those atrophied ovaries were still producing. I'm not sure how common that is but the Drs seemed surprised by it. Good luck with your surgery.

Re: How long do your natural hormones stay?

greyown,

Thank you so much for the info. My doctor said he would leave it if I wanted to, but it would reduce the chance of cancer to remove it. I don't need the ovary any more than I need my uterus, cervix or tubes. It is however, part of me...blah blah blah..

I think I am just tired and ready to get this over with. Didn't mean to sound negative.

Re: How long do your natural hormones stay?

I agree with greyown--I went two years into "menopause" (no periods, night sweats, etc.) but went through another, more dramatic menopause, when I had my TAH-BSO. In my case, those two old atrophies ovaries were definitely producing SOMETHING, and I have really struggled since.
