Ovarian Cysts, pituitary adenomas and such

Here's a little history....in 2006 I had a 15cm hemorrhagic cyst that required surgery. My left ovary and fallopian tube were removed as a result. Fll open laparotomy was done and I was hospitalized 3 days. In 2008 I began having symptoms again and a 6cm hemorrhagic cyst was found. After waiting 2 months it was still growing so surgery was scheduled. Thankfully due to the smaller size this time the surgery was done laproscopically. However, when they went in they discovered my appendix adhered to my fallopian tube and covered in endometriosis. So they removed the cyst, my appendix and the lesions. They saved the ovary and fallopian tube this time.

Fast forward to May/June2010 and I'm having awful cramps and a period that goes on for weeks. Dr thinks I had a miscarriage and says to give it a few months to let my hormones settle and get back to normal. But the periods didn't get better and I went back. She ordered bloodwork and found my prolactin level to be elevated. So she ordered and mri of my pituitary gland. They found a 6mm adenoma and I was off to the neurosurgeon and endocrinologist. At this point I'm in a holding pattern with that and will be having another mri in february to see if it's changing or not.

Mean while in Nov I could feel that I had a cyst. Same symptoms as other 2 times. I've been waiting it out to see if it goes away but the last 2 days have been very uncomfortable so I'm calling the dr tomorrow. .

Long story short....too late I guess. But are there others who've discovered pituitary tumors and can this be a cause for my recurring cysts? I get migraines and can't take birth control. Does it seem too drastic to want the remaining ovary removed? I'm 35 and have a 14yr old. My fiance is 46 and we don't want more kids.

I'm feeling so overwhelmed with all of the stuff that's happened in the last 9 months

Re: Ovarian Cysts, pituitary adenomas and such

Hi Gidget, I'm sorry I don't have answers for you but wanted to let you know that you aren't alone. I have recently been diagnosed with a pituitary adenoma as well, after bloodwork for crazy hormone levels & an MRI. I'm in a holding pattern as well with the pituitary growth but am scheduled for an oophorectomy (removal of both ovaries) and possible hysterectomy next month. I have ovarian cysts as well & after dealing with 25 years of PMS/PMDD and being relatively close to menopause (I'm 48) my Dr. decided taking them both was smart & will make it clear just how responsible the pituitary tumor is for my outrageous hormone levels. I'll repost if I find any def answers for you. In the meantime, just wanted to let you know that I can sympathize.......take care.

Re: Ovarian Cysts, pituitary adenomas and such

I myself was diagnosed with a Pituitary tumor(MRI done after we found prolactin to be elevated). Mine was 13mm in August 2010. I was terrified, however I have great news. I took Dostinex(cabergoline) for nearly 5 months and I am amazed to say that it is now only 6mm. The medication sucks to be on, but it really did work. Thank goodness I did not opt to have it removed. I have not had any ovarian cysts, so I do not know if there is a connection. I will definitely agree that it is awful to have your hormones out of whack. Hopefully medication will work for you too. By the way, my doctors have told me birth control pills is one of the worst things I could have taken for this condition.
Good Luck!

Re: Ovarian Cysts, pituitary adenomas and such

Are any of you still here? I know these posts were old from a year ago, but I'm wondering if anyone has updates. I have a 12mm adenoma that was found 7 days after hysterectomy when I was being admitted for a PE, had an acute headache that was severe and had an MRI done which found the adenoma. I am seeing the neurosurgeon on Wed. Struggling w/the loss of estrogen (can't take any b/c of blood clots), shock to my body, coumadin, anxiety, depression, etc.

Re: Ovarian Cysts, pituitary adenomas and such

I haven't logged in for a long time and just saw your post. I hope you're doing well. For me the adenoma shrunk and my prolactin levels dropped but I continue to struggle with cysts and endo..

Hope all is well.
