Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jan 03-Jan 09,2011

If your hysterectomy was between Jan 03-Jan 09,2011 this is the place to post your progress during your hysterectomy recovery.

If you have a question about your recovery, please start a new thread to receive answers and support for your concerns instead of including the question in your update! There is information on how to start a new thread in this link: New Here? or you can use this link: Post a New Topic in the Post-Op forum.

Post how you are doing here when you are home and well enough to sit a few minutes at your computer.

We hope you are recovering well with plenty of rest and water and a bit of walking. Don't forget to pamper the princess!

How to use the Recovery Progress Reports thread:

  • 1. This thread is for the purpose of sharing updates on your recovery as you heal from your hysterectomy.

  • 2. Generally, ONE or TWO posts on this thread per member/per day is adequate to share your daily progress and to share encouragement with your surgery week Sisters.

  • 3. Remember to start a new thread on the Post-Op message board to ask your questions.

  • 4. The Progress Report threads will be moved at approximately 8 weeks post-op to the Date Club forum inside the HysterSisters clubhouse.

  • 5. Remember all the love and support you got here as a pre-op member? Now it's YOUR turn to give back to the women in the Pre-Op Hysterectomy Support forum. Extend your hand and your hugs in replies to our pre-op ladies in waiting. This will complete our circle of women helping women!

  • 6. You can also share support and experiences with post-op members in all phases of recovery in the Post-Op Hysterectomy Support forum by replying on the new threads they create.

3 week update!

Hey y'all!

I am checking in with my progress report. This is my first post-op posting, so I will cover all 3 weeks (succinctly).

I had a RAVH due to cervical cancer. A modified-radical, with lymph nodes and ligaments removed to be sure margins were clear.

Surgery Tuesday (12/14), went home Thursday. Puffed up in a rather alarming way on Saturday (abdomen, pubic area, labia [which also turned PURPLE/BLACK]). Alternated ice packs and warm epsom-salt baths. Sunday, started intensely leaking clear fluids and went through several pads each day. This lasted two days. Discoloration and swelling gradually went down.

Symptoms that haven't abated yet:
  • numb, tender skin on top of thighs (this is nerve irritation from lymph node removal, and I don't expect this to go away for a very long time).
  • inability to tell when I need to pee (so I just go regularly)
  • fatigue
  • deep ache when I pee or poop
  • tummy swelling

Still, all of the above is better than having cancer. So if none of these symptoms go away, I am still a grateful girl.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jan 03-Jan 09,2011

Hi I think I posted in the wrong spot earlier. My name is Debbie and I just had hysterectomy with A&P repair on Monday (I don't know all the terminology you all use - sorry!)
Was in severe pain for awhile but the drugs worked great. Apparently, they should not have let me go home after catheter was taken out when I still couldn't pee more than a trickle on my own (8 hours after removing it). I left thinking that I could relax more at home and go, but still couldn't. Went back to ER a few hours later where they put another Foley catheter in and are having me wear it around for a few days till the swelling goes down. Now I feel great, only needing Advil and pain killers every once in awhile.

I'd like to invite you to a recovery chat , scheduled for Friday, January 7, at 1 pm eastern time (noon central, 11 mountain, 10 pacific) in the HysterSisters chatroom.

(See this Time Zone Converter to check times for other locations.) The chatroom will be open for approximately an hour and a half.

The chatroom link above provides some information about using the chatroom.

This chat will provide an opportunity for women in the early weeks of recovery to share recovery progress, ask questions, and get to know each other a bit. There will be some hostesses (including yours truly) present as well to help answer some questions and point you to some helpful resources on our website.

Hope to see you there!

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jan 03-Jan 09,2011

Hi, ladies! Welcome to the post-op side.

You may have run into me over on the pre-op pages, as I'm a hostess over there. For the next few weeks, I'll be hanging out here on this thread to help guide you through the first weeks of recovery.

I can still remember coming home from the hospital back in September of 2004. It felt like no one had EVER been through what I had been through! I was sore, had three Jackson-Pratt drains coming out of me, and all I wanted to do was sleep! For the first few weeks, I couldn't do much more than lumber around the main floor of the house and run the remote control on the TV.

I hope all of you had successful surgeries and that your recoveries are uneventful!

Two days out. I have enough gas to heat this old farm house til spring it feels like. Baby wipes for bathroom times are great! Hubs, laffs at my belly, but has gone beyond the call of duty. Tylenol 3 helps the pain as does drinking water n napping. Should have done this years ago.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jan 03-Jan 09,2011

Hi Sisters,
Toda is my 1st full day home from the hospital. I had a TAH and removal of right Tube which was really a mess and difficult according to my Dr.
I didn't sleep very well last night(1st night home) and I was up every 2 hours to go pee. I finally got up at 4am and took some pain meds and then went back to bed and managed to sleep pretty well.
I still have this dreaded cough/throat clearing from were they had a tube stuck down my throat during the 4 hour operation. I keep feeling like I need to cough up phlem/mucus but nothing comes up. Very annoying.
Today I am feeling quite a bit of pain all across my lower back and were my stitches are when I get up and in my lower abdomen. I seem to be peeing ok but have not been able to have a BM yet or even pass gas. Anyway, I thought I would share my progress with you.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jan 03-Jan 09,2011

I agree -- not much fun right now. They took out catheter this morning and I'm able to pee on my own (yeah!), but I'm so bloated with air and I have not had a BM since Sunday, the day before the surgery. My lower abdomen is pretty sore, as is my back and neck (maybe from lying around so much). I am just glad I'm able to pee on my own again -- quite the accomplishment!
