Preparing for care post-op

My husband and I just moved across country, and a month later I found out that at 23 I need a hysterectomy. I go in on January 10th to schedule and do our question and answer session, but I thought I'd get some advice here as well. I'm finally coming to terms with the surgery but I have my fears. My biggest concern right now is that I am a stay at home mom of a 2 year old and a 5 month old. Anyone who would be able to come help my husband and I out while he is at work would have to fly out here. I was wondering if anyone who has gone through this before me could give me some advice on how long I should have some one here the whole day with me to help with the kids. My husband won't be gone more than usually 4 hours at a time as he comes home for lunch. Any advice and/or support would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Preparing for care post-op

You may be a stay at home Mom but you should really consider daycare for your recovery time. You can't pick up your children and they need allot of attention as you know already. Please find a church daycare or something that will take your kids for the short term. You have to take it easy and that is not possible with babies. You might try and find a sitter through a church that could come stay during the day and help out.
Good Luck and keep us posted on what you decide to do.

Re: Preparing for care post-op

I am also a SAHM to a 2 year old and I had my TAH just before Thanksgiving. Thankfully my hubby had a lot of vacation time that he could use to stay home with me because I definitely could NOT have taken care of our son on my own. When my husband did go back to work after 2 1/2 weeks, I still needed friends to take my son for the afternoons so that I could rest. I could only handle 2-3 hours at a time with him and then I needed at least that much time to rest before I could take care of him again. I would say that it was at least 3 weeks before I could do all day on my own. And don't be tempted to pick up your kids before your doctor gives you the okay. I had a hard time with that, but it could cause setbacks for you, so try to resist. Best of luck to you!!
