Estrogen cream to reduce scarring? Any side effects?
My urologist wants to put me on vaginal estrogen cream because he predicts I will have vaginal dryness from scarring. He says it is safe because it is a low dose and not absorbed beyond the vagina so I wont have side effects. This isn't what I read in the literature. I had a hysterectomy, but he left one ovary, rectocle and cystocel repair, bladder sling, vault suspension, & perneorraphy. I have migraines & a higher risk than normal for stroke, plus have had breast cysts. What is your experience with vaginal estrogen & how long have you had to take it? Is it used to prevent scarring? I don't see that in the literature.

Re: Estrogen cream to reduce scarring? Any side effects?
Hello!
There are a lot of members on this site who have been prescribed vaginal estrogen to help promote healing. Is that what your doctor meant? It helps keep the tissues healthy--moist and elastic.
I have used vaginal estrogen for vaginal dryness/atrophy and never had any systemic effects from it, but there are members on this site who post that they have.
Discuss your concerns with your doctor so you can weigh the benefits versus possible risks.
I hope your recovery is going well!

Re: Estrogen cream to reduce scarring? Any side effects?
Hi. I was just prescribed estrace 2 weeks ago. I have both my ovaries but started feeling extreme dryness and burning (very uncomfortable). I thought maybe I could get by with otc stuff (including replens). My dr said that the otc remedies would give me temporary relief but suspects my ovaries haven't woken up - I have not had any hot flashes but I've been starting to experience anxiety. I will be 48 this year and he said my age & hysterectomy might mean hormone issues.
I noticed a difference the first night I used it. I was prescribed 1/2 gram for 2 weeks and then I need to use it 2 - 3 times a week (1/2 gram). I think because its such a small amount it's not 'messy' for me - some women complain of that. It really makes a difference in the dryness which I find hard to tolerate.
The first few days I used it I did have a slight headache and slight light headed feeling - but it went away. Good luck to you!
