Estrace 1mg anyone?

I have not had my surgery yet, scheduled march 9 but dr wants me to try to "try" to see if i can tolerate the estrace (soy based estrogen).
Is anyone taking this and how are they doing? They are taking my ovaries and dr said that hopefully this will keep hot flashes away.

Re: Estrace 1mg anyone?

Hello!

I'm using Vivelle Dot 0.1, which is a transdermal patch of estradiol, the same estrogen in the Estrace your doctor is recommending for you. I'm happy with it because it's effective for me as well as being convenient to use.

I didn't start on hormone therapy until after my surgery. I'm not sure about the idea of using it before surgery to see if you can tolerate it if your ovaries are already producing the hormones you need. If you get too much estrogen, it can trigger menopause symptoms--the very thing we're trying to avoid.

What is the reason you're having your ovaries removed? If there isn't a sound medical reason to remove them, I hope you will keep them just as you would keep other healthy body parts. Even after menopause the ovaries produce beneficial hormones, which of course are free. Removing the ovaries can open up a whole new set of problems if you aren't able to find hormone balance. One only has to browse through threads posted in the Sexual Dysfunction forum to see the possible consequences. That's not said to scare you but part of making decisions involves weighing the pros and cons along with understanding the potential consequences. Research this carefully as obviously once the ovaries are gone, you can't get them back.

I wish you the best for your surgery and recovery!

Re: Estrace 1mg anyone?

Since i am 48 he feels that keeping them would only help for a couple years, they will shut down and his feeling is to take them now rather than possibly have some issues and have to go back and get them in another surgery. I have pcos, but when i asked he thought it was best to take them.
