Do hormones effect weight gain?
I am reading alot on hrt and such, and wondering if hrt leads to weight gain? I have recently lost 20 lbs and am praying maybe after my surgeries (gallbladder and hysterectomy) i might lose another 20 but am concerned if put on horomones if that weight will come back?

Re: Do hormones effect weight gain?
It is not necessarily the ert/hrt, but an imbalance of hormones that can lead to weight gain. Too often, it gets blamed on the ert/hrt. Menopause and thyroid issues can cause weight issues.
I am 11+ years post op, on hrt, and thus far have avoided weight gain. Granted, I am not where I was when I was 20 and the weight has shifted a bit, but I wear size 2 or 4, depending on the fit of the pant.
I did have some issues in the beginning, but once things settled down and I found balance, the little bit of extra weight came off.

Re: Do hormones effect weight gain?
Thanks for you input. I am a bit nervous becaus my thyroid doesnt work, althugh i am on a fairly low dose of meds for it i worry that the surgery and hormones will effect what i have lost, i dont want to put on the weight as my body seem to not lose very efficiently.

Re: Do hormones effect weight gain?
I am 54 years old & 1 year and 2 months post op. My doctor did not put me on hormones. She wanted to see if I could manage naturally. So far, so good. I wanted to give you a little encouragement concerning weight gain after a hysterectomy. In that time since my surgery, I have lost a total of 74 pounds. I needed to lose weight & I had heard that after a hysterectomy, you gain weight. I know I didn't need to gain anymore because it would be worse for me health-wise as I was already extremely overweight. I have about 45 more pounds to lose to be proportionate for my height & frame and to be healthy. I am continuing the plan that I am on. I am having no more than between 1200 - 1250 calories a day, no more than 25 grams of fat a day, exercise every day & making sure I drink enough water. I hope this helps you. God bless you.

Re: Do hormones effect weight gain?
I had a complete hysterectomy 3 months ago. I was put on estradiol 0.5 mg. since then I had been gaining up to a lb. a week. I watch everything I eat,try to stay with organic foods. I count every calorie and take in probably less than 1,000 per day. I look like everything has swollen..I stopped taking the HRT 2 days ago, under dr.s orders. I was told that if I didn't start to loose weight to contact my primary care dr. incase something else is happening. My gyn. had offered to try me on some other form of HRT but I refused.

Re: Do hormones effect weight gain?
My TAH-Bso was last March. I was on Vivelle dot at increasing strengths until September. During that time I put on weight and also looked as if I hadbeen blown up with a tire pump. I was exercising 1 hour a day and watching what I ate. It was beyond depressing, plus I was feeling emotionally like a wreck. Out of desperation I saw a Menopause specialist who did blood work which showed I was seriously low in all hormones. I now have pellets inserted and have lost 15 lbs in 4 months. I am thrilled! But in my case I was not absorbing the patch so my weight gain seems to have been caused by no hormones.

Re: Do hormones effect weight gain?
Hiya,
I did gain weight since my TAH last May, but that is also be because I was using food as comfort and I eat in too many restaurants, etc. However, last week I decided to take (more) control of my life and have signed up with Weight Watchers..I did tell the leader that I was on HRT because I am not sure how that will affect my weight loss as I hear it is harder to lose once on hormones. However, summer is coming and I want to get fit for hiking season, so that is my motivation (as well as increased health). I have over 50 pounds to lose so I will keep u posted!

Re: Do hormones effect weight gain?
I must say this is a litttle depressing. Had my LSH/BSO last Thursday (Feb 3) and just started Estrodriol (oral) last night. Before my surgery I had spent the last 3 months eating right and working out 4 to 5 days a week to lose 20lbs, was on track to lose another 15 to 20.
I know everyone is different but Im really hoping that this is not going to reverse all that I have done.

Re: Do hormones effect weight gain?
Hi jpjhooper! (great name, by the way).
Don't be too depressed about this, especially since it is such early days for you. While it would tempting to blame my weight gain entirely on HRT/surgical menopause, the truth is that for past few months I have also been eating when I was sad and eating when I was happy! While I suspect it is going to take me forever to lose the weight I want, I will never be a supermodel and I am just trying to focus now on eating better and getting stronger after the horrific events of last year. I have already noticed that I feel better just because I am actually eating healthier foods. It certainly sounds like you are doing the right thing by working out and 'eating right' so once you recover I would just keep doing what you were doing-it sounds 'all good'. Be careful not to overdo the ab work, tho-I still get the occasional twinge from time to time.
Best of luck in the struggle.
