I don't even know where to start

I had a TAH BSO on the 13th of Jan. I wasn't expecting to lose both ovaries but surgeon was left with no choice. Now I'm left with the aftermath of it. My doctor doesn't want to start me on HRT yet because I had a severe case of endo. She did start me on Effexor (I think that's how it's spelled) to help with the symptoms of menopause. Now I'm at a loss...I don't know where to go from here. She said I need to increase my calcium and should start on a good multi vitamin.

What else do I do? I've looked on different sites about menopause but am still at a loss. What types of things are a MUST for menopause? Any suggestions to get me started?

Re: I don't even know where to start

Shellee -

I found some good information in a book called "sudden menopause" even though it is written for those who experienced surgical menopause at a young age it helped me.

Also if you look at the Hormone Menu there is a list of supplements.

Things that I've added and that have helped me Magnesium. I was already taking calcium from in my 40's.

as you try to learn more about all of this.

Re: I don't even know where to start

I am not certain from your post whether you were in menopause prior to surgery or if you suddenly were in surgical menopause. For me, I was put into surgical menopause and it was pretty tough at first. I really thought I was prepared because I had been in medical menopause prior and thought it couldn't be too much different. I was wrong. We have been trying to get everything balanced and it has been a struggle. I also had hyst for endo. I have had to increase my calcium recently due to thinning of bones. One tip with calcium is to make sure you have it with Vit. D-my calcium comes with it. It helps to absorb it better.
i think a lot of this is trial and error. As you go along, you find out what works for you and what doesn't. I have had to be very careful of any supplements because I ended up in hospital one time partly due to reaction to Black Cohosh. So now am very leery of taking anything OTC. Sending hugs. And it definitely improves as time goes on.

Re: I don't even know where to start

No, I wasn't in menopause before the surgery. I've never had problems with my right ovary so I expected to keep it but it was covered in endo and attached firmly to my uterus so it had to be removed. I knew it was a possibility, but since I'd never had problems with it before...I just didn't expect it to come out.

Thanks for the info and well wishes ladies. I will check out that book.
