where did my hot flashes go?
Hi,
I am almost 8 weeks post-op from my surgery. After about 1 week the hot flashes started with a vengence. Night sweats were even worse. Getting up about 6 times a night to cool down. I saw my gyn at 5 weeks and she wanted to wait another 4 weeks to start HRT b/c of the risk of post-op blood clots. Now for some unknown reason, the flashes are almost non-existant and the night sweats have dissapeared! I will see the gyn in 2 weeks to start HRT and I am wondering...have the flashes gone for good? Or will they return?
Thanks for any help.

Re: where did my hot flashes go?
My surgery was actually to remove my ovaries. Finishing up the TAH which was started 20 years ago. However, I did some research since my post and it seems that excercise has something to do with hot flashes. I started working out (30 mins 4-5 days a week on my treadmill) about 2 weeks ago and it seems that my have something to do with it. This is what I found:
"Exercise helps to decrease hot flashes by lowering the amount of circulating FSH and LH and by raising endorphine levels (which drop during a hot flash). Even 20 minutes three times a week can significantly reduce hot flashes. "
I don't know for sure, but it seems to make sense. I'll ask my doc. Anyway, I need to work out and now I have something that pushes me more!! Now if I could do something about the drying out of my entire body! haha Beggers can't be choosers!
Thanks so much for the reply.

Re: where did my hot flashes go?
Hi
I have kept my ovaries since my hysterectomy but have had hot flashes for years, probably at least 2 years, and then a week ago they suddenly stopped. I am also wondering if my ovaries have just quit altogether and I have just passed through that symptom of menopause. I am now at a normal temperature instead of sweating all day and all night on and off and I keep thinking it's a miracle - if it lasts!
I have not done anything different like starting to exercise or taken any different supplement so it just happened on its own.

Re: where did my hot flashes go?
Count me in as another one who has had hot flashes on and off for the last couple of years. They seem to come and go over the span of a few months. I had a lot of them in the three months after the surgery but now they seem to be on their way out again. I don't think I had any yesterday and none today so far. I don't know what it is all about but even when I have them, it isn't too bad as they only last 30 seconds.

Re: where did my hot flashes go?
I was just thinking that I have started to have ground flax seed on my cereal for about a month now and maybe this has helped with the hot flashes or maybe they have just subsided and it's not related. My skin is very dry though and I have joint pain (fingers) and a bit in the ankles, starting to get dandruff now which I have never had in my life, dry eyes - oh the joys of menopause...

Re: where did my hot flashes go?
Thanks, good to hear. I am really stressing about my gyn visit tomorrow...I'm supposed to get hrt at this appt and was trying to decide. No hot flashes for over a couple of weeks. But the dry skin is horrible! My black shirts are covered in small white flecks of skin on the inside. Grosses me out! Also the dry eyes and vaginal dryness are a pain too! I'm afraid if I tell my gyn that the hot flashes are gone she will not prescribe the hrt. I'm hoping that will help the dryness symptoms. Plus, the hot flashes might come back...
Thanks for the input!

Re: where did my hot flashes go?
Hi,
Yes, the hot flashes might come back. I know what you mean about the dry skin but lots of women have told me the same thing about dry skin in menopause.
It has been a week now since the last real hot flash so I am thinking positive!

Re: where did my hot flashes go?
Thanks to all,
I saw my gyn yesterday and she said that you don't have the hot flashes forever, and they might not return! However, she put me on the Vivelle Dot anyway, (thank goodness) and some Premarin vaginal cream to jump start.
She also said if my libido did not return (like it's going to arrive on a train or something!!), that she would prescribe some progesterone cream. We'll see! I was pleased with the visit and hoping this dryness improves!
Blessings and "chill out"!!
