Suggestions on vitamins/supplements pre-op?

Hello my sisters!

I'm waiting for the call back from the DR. for the big date, which will be in the first week of December, just in time to give myself the best Christmas present ever - freedom from fibroids at last. I currently take Centrum Performance and 1 slow release iron tablet a day. Is there anything else (calcium, Vitamin C, etc.) that I should increase while I wait to help speed healing post-op? Can anyone recommend a good vitamin/supplement website for this kind of info? I was taking Ginkogen, which is a combination of ginko biloba, ginseng, and garlic, but I understand that ginko and ginseng may increase bleeding, so I've stopped taking them. I'll also go back to regular Centrum, because the Preformance form has those herbals included in it.

I also have stepped up my walking program and my dr. says he's never had a patient who looked forward to having major surgery as much as I am! <g> I told him this will be a breeze compared to the last 5 years!

Big hugs to you all, especially those in waiting too,
Arebella
(who has chosen to go with a total abdominal hysterectomy and removal of both ovaries)

I'm losing very little compared to what I'll gain when this is over - my life back!

Arebella,
Hello!
I don't know the name of the website where my husband found this information. However, some of the things they listed were - vitamins C,E and A , L-Glutamine, Arginine and Tourine - all to aid in the post op recovery.
I think you have a wonderful attitude!
Best wishes and good luck!

Arebella,
Please consult YOUR doctor as to what you are ALLOWED to continue to take prior to having your surgery. There are some things that you should not take prior to surgery.

I've included a link to give you some idea.

Bottom line~~~~Your doctor can tell you what you should and should not take.

Suggestions on vitamins/supplements pre-op?

One thing my Dr emphasized to me is that women often don't think enough - both pre and post op - about how important it is to get enough good quality protein. He suggested that I eat more chicken and egg whites, and try some protein shakes and/or bars. Also said that getting enough of the B vitamins is imp while your body is under stress. C is good for strengthening blood vessels and capilaries, and can help in recovery. And, go easy on vit E pre-op as it can thin your blood.

Good luck to you!

Pre-surgery supplements

Hi Arebella, funny, I've been researching this tonight and making my list of supplements. You still have time for research, my doctor didn't tell me anything, not even about aspirin or Advil as far as thinning the blood. I have a great book, Prescription for Nutritional Healing which recommends quitting vit.E two weeks before since it thins the blood. Vit.C is very good, the book recommends 6-10,000 mg. buffered spread out throughout the day, aloe juice to cleanse the colon, CoQ10 60mg, Essential Fatty Acids, and L-Cystine, L-Glutamine, & L-Lysine 500mg.ea. Your best bet is to get yourself a good book such as this and you can read in detail how these help your body. Vitamin E is excellent after surgery. You can make a list and talk to your doctor about it. I also have a list of healing broths to make, fresh veggie juices, and teas. My surgery date is Nov. 27, and I'm happy I've lost 10 pounds, 7 inches, am eating super healthy and working out-I'm lucky to physically feel good enough to keep active. Happy Holidays! We're all looking foward to feeling better! Take Care, Ellen

Thanks, ladies!

Thank you all so much for your advice. My big day has been set for Dec. 3rd, and I'll be seeing the dr. this afternoon for a little "chat". I've printed all this out to take with me and et his recomendations.

You guys ROCK!

Hugs,
Arebella

Arebella,
I'm happy that the list is helpful for you. I'm pleased that you will discuss this further with your OWN doctor. This is so important.
Best wishes to you!

Arabella,

Hello and Welcome to HysterSisters. So glad that you have found us. It is great to see another sister from Westerville, I also live in the Westerville, OH area.

I agree with Pattygefa that you should definitely speak with your doctor about what you Can and Cannot take prior to surgery. Each doctor is different and each one has his/her own specifications.

I hope that your visit went well yesterday. And I wish you the very best with your upcoming surgery.
