Premarin vs. Estradiol

Hi there,
First of off I have to say once again I love this website. Even though I don't always log on I'm here looking around all the time.
Had a DaVinci on 12/14. Took everything except left ovary. I was told I would still make hormones from that one but I guess not because I have been a crazy insane woman!
Went to primary doctor and she gave me Premarin. My insurance did not cover the whole cost and it was way more than my co-pay of $10. Therefore called my PCP and asked for some other one that was covered. A few days went by and I was so crazy I decided to bite the bullet and just pay for the premarin. Today she has called me in Estradiol, that is covered.
My question is, has anyone tried either of these and if so have had good results? I did have a little issue with the premarin after I read things but my sanity is very importatnt too. Any comments would help.

Re: Premarin vs. Estradiol

I'm sorry your remaining ovary hasn't kicked in to produce enough hormones for you. Hopefully it will as you get further from recovery.

Premarin is equine based therapy while estradiol is plant based, bio-identical to one of the estrogens produced by the ovaries. Which one of the two is best for you can only be determined by you--there are women who do really well on Premarin and many who do really well on the estradiol. We support them all in their decisions. If you prefer not to use Premarin, the estradiol is a good option. It's one that many members on this site use in one form or another. For example, I use Vivelle Dot which is an estrogen patch changed every 3 1/2 days.

There is a generic for Estrace pills which you can get inexpensively at pharmacies that participate in the low-cost prescription program. You may be able to get it for as little as $4 for a 30 day supply or $10 for a 90 day supply.

Let us know which one you decide to use and how you're doing, okay?
