Hysterectomy next month- HRT questions

Hello all. I am a new user here. I have my hysterectomy scheduled for next month and am trying to research my HRT options. Was wondering what has worked well for you ladies. My doc said we would start with a patch and go from there. Does the patch stay on well through showers and baths? Do I need to request a vaginal cream in addition to whatever patch, pill, etc. that I end up with? I am only 31 and don't want my sex life to be over! What is the best treatment for vaginal dryness? Lots of questions, I know.... Thanks.

Misty

Re: Hysterectomy next month- HRT questions

Hi Misty! to HysterSisters!

We're pleased to have you as a new member here and look forward to sharing with you right on through your recovery.

You're smart to start asking questions now. The topic can be overwhelming! There's a lot of information that will help with questions in this link: Hormone Jungle Articles so enjoy having a look there.

Is your doctor going to prescribe a brand-name patch for you? Hopefully so, as from all I've read on this site, they tend to stick better than the generic patches. I use Vivelle Dot myself and have been using it for years. I'm happy with the symptom control and it is convenient to use, too. So long as I remember to change it every 3 1/2 days, I'm good to go! It sticks through baths, showers, exercise and even for swimming. Of course not everyone does well on the estrogen patches but there are plenty of other options. Consider asking your doctor for free samples so that you can try something out before committing to a full prescription.

You may or not need a vaginal estrogen--it's not a given that you will experience vaginal dryness bad enough to warrant the use of additional estrogen. If you do have dryness, personal lubricant can be sufficient to help. If not, then yes, ask your doctor about vaginal estrogen. You'll find good information about what's available in this link: Vaginal Dryness.

Be sure to visit the Pre-Op Hysterectomy Support message board if you have questions or concerns about your upcoming surgery. There's information to help you prepare here in the Pre-Op Page.

Best wishes for your surgery and recovery!

Re: Hysterectomy next month- HRT questions

Hi Misty,
I've been on the Vivelle Dot for over 4 months and I've been happy with it. The hospital only had the Climara patch which was put on me right after surgery. I didn't like it because it was large and didn't stay on well. It is changed once a week and the Vivelle dot is changed 2x a week.
The Vivelle dot is much smaller and sticks very well in the water (I'm in a swimming pool several times a week), so no problem there.
I use a vaginal estrogen cream once a week because I had vaginal repairs and it's helped with the healing. It does seem to keep the vaginal walls in good condition.
I'm 54 and was perimenopausal before the surgical menopause. I'm sure that my estrogen needs are much different than they were at 31.
You're wise to be researching this ahead of time. I wish you well!

Re: Hysterectomy next month- HRT questions

April- Thanks for all the links and info. I'm gonna look at those as soon as I'm done typing this reply.

LoveBirds- Thanks for sharing your experience with the Vivelle dot. I will talk with my doctor about that one. A little nervous about this, but glad that I will no longer have worries related to my female dysfunctionalism!!

Peace.

Re: Hysterectomy next month- HRT questions

Hey Misty

I am on estrogen and testosterone gel for my HRT and I find it really convenient. One of the things I like is being able to change the dose without having to go back to doc and get a new script, which is useful while I am still early days post op and still adjusting.

I started to have some issues with vaginal dryness but as I was still having hot flashes at the time I opted for upping the dose of the estrogel rather than using a separate product for that for the moment.

Might be worth asking your doctor about testosterone replacement too. I am 34 and the 2 gynos I dealt with were very much of the opinion that testosterone replacement is very important at our kind of age.

Wishing you all the best

Re: Hysterectomy next month- HRT questions

Hi Misty,
good luck with your surgery. I was put on Vivelle Dot .05 right away a few days after surgery and I feel exactly the way I did prior to, as far as emotions etc. go. No vaginal dryness, moodswings, hotflashes, nada!
The patch is great, sticks good and does not come off in the shower or in the pool. Since you change it 2x a week, it just barely starts getting a little grimy around the edges before it's time to put on a new one.
Good luck,
Guera

Re: Hysterectomy next month- HRT questions

Hi! First I just want to wish you luck on your surgery. I had mine five weeks ago. Hospital put Climera patch and it is too big and bulky. Dr had me switch as soon as I got out of the hospital. I'm on Vivelle dot .25 which is the losest you can go. I love the patch. It sticks really well. I've never had it even start to come off. My mood is great and i only get night sweats once in while and even they are'nt too bad. Just feel really hot,but no major sweating. Good luck to you!!
