Crazy hormones, 6 months post-op, kept ovaries

I'm about 6 months post-op and have been dealing with what I assume are crazy hormones for about the last four months. I've had oily skin/hair, no libido, insomnia, mood swings like you wouldn't believe and my PMS symptoms that usually only bothered me a few days each month are now bothering me for about two weeks each month. I went to see my OBGYN to see if there was anything that could be done about this since I was sure it was my hormone levels.....he checked my thyroid, but said he doesn't check hormone levels.....that what I'm experiencing is normal and that I'll have to deal with it until around the age of 52 (ten years from now) when I will go through menopause. According to him, my only option would be to put me on birth control pills to shut down my ovaries. Really, birth control pills after a hysterectomy?

I saw my family doctor yesterday and she assured me that what I was experiencing was normal. She doesn't want to check my hormone levels until a year after my surgery....she said there's just no way to get a baseline for me because they're all over the place for the first year. In the meantime, she gave something to try to help with the emotions and mood swings that I've been dealing with. She indicated that most likely, in 6 months, she will end up giving me a progesterine cream to help balance everything out. It felt good to have her validate what I was feeling instead of telling me that I would just have to deal with it for the next 10 years.

If anyone else out there is dealing with this, hang in there! Find a doctor that will really listen to you! If anyone has gone through this, I'd love to hear from you to know how you ended up dealing with it.

Thanks for letting me vent! This has been an interesting journey!

Re: Crazy hormones, 6 months post-op, kept ovaries

I'm only 7 weeks post-op and also kept my ovaries. I had blood work last week because of insomnia and extreme fatiuge. My hormone levels are "Postmenopausal".

I talked to the nurse and she said the ovaries may still kick in, suggested I talk to the doctor about HRT while I'm waiting to see when/if that happens.

I'm 43 and thought keeping my ovaries would mean I wouldn't be having these symptoms for a few more years.

Re: Crazy hormones, 6 months post-op, kept ovaries

I can relate to this. I went to my gyno doc Friday because of the terriable insomnia & the blues. I have one ovary & he did a harmone ck, so I will find out Monday what the results r. But it's looking like I may be having that asleep ovary removed in 4 wks fingers crossed my lil buddy wakes up asap, not wanting to go thru another operation anytime soon!

Re: Crazy hormones, 6 months post-op, kept ovaries

Thank you for both of your responses. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one dealing with this. Amba, I hope you get everything straightened out soon. HeatherF, I hope that ovary wakes up and you don't need to deal with another surgery! I wish that someone would check my levels, but I guess I can understand that they'll be all over the chart for a while. I also thought that keeping my ovaries would mean that I wouldn't have to deal with these issues for a few more years! Hang in there and good luck to you both!
