Unhappy - Kept ovaries, now need HRT? Kept ovaries, now need HRT?

I'm about 8 weeks post op, kept my ovaries and cervix. Have not regained any energy so my doctor did lab work...thyroid and iron are ok, hormones show "postmenopausal".

I had read here that ovaries can be in shock or 'sleeping' but could start working. Today my doctor said they may fire off here and there but never enough that my body will need.

He's ordering Estriodal pills for me to start. I'm 43 and did not expect this from the surgery. He didn't tell me that even keeping my ovaries I would need HRT.

Re: Kept ovaries, now need HRT?

IMHO you are still very early post op. If you can put up with the symptoms, I would wait awhile. Full recovery from a hyst can take much longer than 6-8 weeks. It was six months to a year before I had full stamina. If lack of energy is your only symptom I would wait.

Re: Kept ovaries, now need HRT?

I don't have hot flashes or night sweats. I did have some trouble sleeping but that is getting a little better, but I still seem to crash after work.

The closest thing I've had to hot flashes is a few nights I was "warm", but I also had put a new blanket on my bed...could be why? I also thought my face felt burning a day last week...those things along with being tired are, according to my male doctor, hormone related and my ovaries will not start working again.

If anyone knows anything about hormones (I don't) my FSH test was 39.3 and estrodiol was <20...both at postmenopausal levels. Any one else have that and then have their ovaries wake up and function again?

Maybe it is hormones (or lack of) but right now, if I had known this, I may have waited longer for surgery. OH, and add being emotional to my symptoms.

Re: Kept ovaries, now need HRT?

The thing is, I think alot of your symptoms may be normal at this point in your recovery. Mood swings, sleeping issues, fatigue, those are all very common, ovaries or not. As I said, if you are leary on taking hormones it might be worthwhile to be patient and give your body and ovaries more time to recover from surgery.
