To start HRT or not to start ...

that is my question.

I am 8 weeks post op (TAH) and have had no symptoms, apart from being a touch warmer sometimes while sleeping. No sweating, not boiling, just a bit warmer at times.

I actually feel happier now?

Anyhow, yesteday, I had my first post op app't and said the only thing that concerned me was libido. I don't even think about it, not interested like before and I think I'm dryer (my undies are always cleaner now ... sorry .. tmi!!). So, this is my symptom.

He prescribed Climara (.50) and Vagifem, (not to use both, but to try one or the other).

I am concerned about starting either due to the fact there is breast cancer in my family (2 aunts, 2 cousins) but he knows that.

Would either medication make me more interested in sex? I don't know if it would be worth even trying.

Has anyone used either? What side effects did you experience?

Re: To start HRT or not to start ...

Hi Donna,

At 8 weeks post op it really is too soon to tell how your libido is going to be affected overall. You are very early in your recovery. If your only reason for starting estrogen is for that reason, I would give it some more time.

Vagifem and Climara are very different. Vagifem is not a systematic estrogen, it is for vaginal dryness. Climara on the other hand is a systematic estrogen that can help with symptoms of imbalance such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, etc. You cannot compare the two. Interesting that your doctor said one or the other as many women here find that they need vaginal estrogen in addition to their systematic estrogen.

Re: To start HRT or not to start ...

Yes, the only reason (pretty much) is for vag. dryness and sex drive.

He did note the differences and left it up to me if I just wanted to use the vagifem (for dryness) or the climara that may take care of both issues. They didn't say to use together. He mentioned if my sex drive isn't taken care of, in six months (when I see him again) he may add testosterone. (sp?)

The pharmacy sells a lubricant that is a gel and stays for up to 3 days. I bought it to try that out.

I am going to call my breast clinic to mention the meds first as there is b.c. in my family (2 aunts, 2 cousins). The doctor knows this but noted it was the lowest dose I would be on.

He also mentioned that if I haven't experienced symptoms as of now, more than likely I won't (flashes, etc.) ... probably it's just my body make-up and would have happened this way (no symptoms-or little) even if I didn't have the surgery.

Decisions .....

I think I will try to have "fun" first and see what happens ... or doesn't! .....
