Kept 1 ovary, how long to wait to have hormones checked?

I have been looking around and have seen comments indicating that 6-8 weeks may be too soon to consider hormones, etc. From another post:

  Quote:
IMHO you are still very early post op. If you can put up with the symptoms, I would wait awhile. Full recovery from a hyst can take much longer than 6-8 weeks. It was six months to a year before I had full stamina. If lack of energy is your only symptom I would wait.
I am 14 weeks post-op. (have one ovary) I have an appointment with my primary care doctor on Tuesday due to significant depression and anxiety issues over the past month or so. I also have irritability, insomnia, and headaches. I am not sure if it is hormone related or not and wondered if 14 weeks is a little early as well or how long I should expect to wait. I have been on anti-anxiety meds for a while which are no longer as effective. I would like to be prepared before my appointment to know what to expect and what to ask at this stage in my recovery in light of my symptoms, etc.

I would appreciate any insight. Thanks!

Re: Kept 1 ovary, how long to wait to have hormones checked?

I feel 14 weeks is long enough. From the sounds of it your symptoms describe me exactly when my estrogen levels are way too low.
I also have one ovary and after 2 months postop it was obvious my ovary went on permanent vacation! It has been 5 years now and I am still using HRT...otherwise I suffer with severe depression, anxiety, and insomnia ...and nothing really helps except HRT. It can be quite common for ovaries to stop working properly after a hysterectomy. Sometimes they will start up on their own but there is no way to tell if they will or not. You have to go by how you feel. If you are suffering you need to ask for help.

Good luck at the DR on Tuesday. Let us know how it goes.

Re: Kept 1 ovary, how long to wait to have hormones checked?

If you want your hormones checked, then you should have them checked. I think it's a good idea to at least have a baseline...see where you are now, where you are again later.

I just had a discussion with my doctors nurse about this...she thinks I'm crazy for wanting more labs done. I'm almost 10 weeks postop and kept both ovaries, had labs done 3 weeks ago but didn't get to talk to the doctor about results and his nurse said he called in estrogen for me..no discussion. I told the nurse I wanted my hormones checked again and made an appointment to talk to the doctor. I wish I knew what my hormone levels were before surgery, if my ovaries were already getting ready for retirement.

Re: Kept 1 ovary, how long to wait to have hormones checked?

I am 6 weeks post-op, with a partial right ovary left and started hormones this morning after my check up. I discussed with my dr, my symptoms(anytime I sleep sweats, insomnia, extreme mood swings and hair loss) and he said there is a 1% chance that the remaining ovary never recovers. He did do bloodwork and is going to re-evaluate in 2 weeks, but thought that since my symptoms had not let up at all that low dose hormones would be a good idea. Hopefully you have got some answers today. Good luck to you!

Re: Kept 1 ovary, how long to wait to have hormones checked?

Thanks for all of the responses. The doctor upped my anxiety meds strength and suggested Stress B complex vitamins, go back on melatonin for sleep with Ambien for occasional use. Exercise for stress relief as well. I go back in 6 weeks and will look at hormone levels if this doesn't help things out.
