Catheter

I had a LAVH with a BSO on Nov 19. Am feeling great from the surgery but I have to have a catheter because I couldn't pee when I left the hospital. Now I am really worried I won't be able to pee when they take out the catheter on Monday. Did anybody else have this problem and how do you overcome the fear of not being able to pee?

Hi Marypam, the bladder gets jostled by the surgery and often times does not respond kindly to it. I'm sure your Dr. feels that by letting your bladder rest until Monday, it will give it some time to recover from the trauma of the surgery.

I think the most important thing for you is to try and relax. Easier said than done, I know!

I had a supra-pubic catheter in place for 18 days post-op and was a little worried myself, but once it was removed, I followed my Drs. instructions and continued to lots of fluids during the day and not allow my bladder to get too full. I found that the sensation of a full bladder is different since my surgery and it took a little getting used to. When my catheter first came out, I just made sure to go to the bathroom at least every two hours, even if I didn't necessarily feel like I had to. My Dr. had me do this for the first couple of weeks. Then in the evening, I limited my fluids so that I could sleep through the night.

Best wishes and 's

i am almost where you are

my name is mary to and i know how you feel. i had a partial hyster, bladder suspension, cycterceal, and 3 hernias repairs done on Nov 13. As of now i still have my supra pubic cath. in.
i have an appt with the urologist on wed. to have this removed. My goal was to have it out last week but i was not ready. By this i mean i had to have less than 75cc of residual urine left after each timed i pee. As of yesterday i have made it. The hardest part is the morning, just trying to get everything moving. I also had alot of swellling with all this work done. Hang in there and don't hurry to have the cath. removed. its comforting to know it is there if i can't go on my own.
Best of luck
mary

I had the same problem. Foley was removed in the hospital but had to have another put in. Came home with it. went back to uro. a week later, remove it but had to have it put back in. Third time out I used a self cath. It is not bad, except I am allergic to betadine (found that out later). Now I can use the toilet, but bladder does not empty. I found out that if I sit on the edge of the bathtub every thing works out great! I am having some leakage so I wear a pad. But it is slowly getting better. I had the same fear of removing the cath. But learned quickly how to use the self cath. Good luck
